My take is that if you can get all of the good Trump positions and policies without the attendant baggage that comes from normies by being named Trump, and if you're actually competent too, then that's a win. DeSantis might be one of the few Republicans who have read the writing on the wall about what Trump brought to the party; others fight it, those in the Bush/Reagan wing, but others embrace it.
On top of all that, I just want the WH back. I'll admit though that if Trump stuck to focusing on what a Grover Cleveland-like second term would bring and also remind voters that he warned them about what would happen if Biden won, he'll still be the favorite.

I agree with what you said on that last part. For all of his personality issues, DDR is not a conventional Republican and isn't really a conservative. He does take a lot of positions that would be left-wing before idpol infected everything in the Democrat Party.
