How to overcome shame when downgrade job
I was E5 at Meta making 450K TC. Got laid off. Luckily I found new job quickly at a non tech company but TC now is only 220k. Feel really ashame when friends/family asking where I work and how I feel. It's like dropping to a big hole and being laughed at by everyone. For those of you who used to make decent TC at FAANGMULA+, how do you overcome the guilt and shame when joining mediocre companies making π₯π₯? I know I have bills to pay and market is horrible now but at the same time have no motivation to work at all. Feel like hating myself everyday for accepting such a job. I used to laugh at those working at those companies but now I have to be part of them, feel conflicting inside myself everyday!
If somebody shames you for your salary, that reflects more on them than it does you. You do what you have to do for your life, opportunities come and go.
OP : what is the point of working hard, I sacrified my time grinding in college and doing leetcode while those people partied and had fun, now we all got paid the same!
Sounds like the problem is less about you making less money but more about they making as much as you.
Lmao is this a joke? Be grateful, dude. Most people in the USA only ever dream of TC 220k. Donβt worry, youβre not going to be there forever. Just apply for other jobs that will give you the pay and wlb you want.
This one is the best
Wow.. really? My husband went from 200k TC to 80kTC.. so STFU
OPwhat kind of role he took? Bartender?
Wow, you suck on the inside. You are only being laughed at by other jerks like yourself. When I feel ashamed for what I have, I go to the bathroom, look myself in the mirror, and say, βgrow the F@&Β£ upβ.
Itβs over for us FAANGcels. We used to have a cope that we at least worked at good companies. Now all people want to do is laugh at us for getting laid off and throw stones at us. We even tried to help people become software engineers, endless tutorials on how to code, tutorials and solutions on Leetcode, study strategies on how to become an engineer, and weβre met with a big middle finger by normies.
Curious ,are you Indian ? Asian ?
Darn SWEs are entitled. Iβm sorry you now live with us peasants making only $220k. Signed, a Peasant with TC: $220k that will never make it to 350k but is grateful to have a blessed life. $220k is top 95th percentile in the USA. Speaking with experience, it helps to hide your face and walk around all day with a veil. It hides the shame well.
Dude stop being a little spoiled whiny baby. Most people in the US and anywhere else in the world can dream of 6 figure salary. Plus if you are not originally from the US then you are even worse and go back home and work for π₯
Blind is not the place for this post unfortunately. But you need to figure out your insecurities, itβs better than being a snob and turning down offers until you run out of $$. I used to feel useless making way less than my peers until I got over myself and stopped the comparison habit. Just set expectations at your new role, interview still when roles get posted, keep your network strong and your skills sharp for the right role when it comes along. You got this.
Take a moment and realize why you thought less of others. Contemplate if your life is actually as horrid as you imagine it. Those with plenty become scared of losing it. But is it really so bad? Ask yourself and grow from this.

Imagine thinking 220k is peasants when this country has an explosion in homelessness and poverty
OP: homelessness and poverty has been there for ages, this is not Wendy Sir!
