Lol I posted that because of the "BIPOC Navy" part, not as a Trump ๐ช gotcha.
R-slurred pundits argue the same thing by doom prophesizing about China building more ships. Ship numbers don't mean anything on their own; that's why displacement was always the key factor in naval treaties.
That said, many of the recent ship procurement projects have been clusterfricks. The LCS being the worst offender. I think the Constellation class is promising return to more useful procurement. I hope they're right about the modernized Arleigh Burkes being sufficient to fully replace the role of the Ticonderogas. The merchant marine fleet could use some bulking out.

a major problem in the US is who controls the house.
Basically the navy is falling into a state of decay as Republicans control the house for longer periods of time, or did post 2011.
Every house member voting on things will try to get something for their district to use as electoral propaganda - because Republicans primarily rep rural areas they basically told the navy to frick off and funneled defense spending into things that might help rurals, as opposed to coastal areas.
Only when they can attack the DNC and claim they're "anti-military" will they start reeing about the navy. The sad part is the navy themselves wants to REDUCE ship numbers because they want to free up resources for a leaner, more advanced fleet.
