Single women and men across China are being told to sign up for a dating app, created by the CPC, which is designed to boost marriage and birth rates.
The app allows users to claim time out of work, paid by the state, to pursue romance.
The objective is marriage, a headline on the app reads.
China is attempting to combat declining birthrates with a 'carrot and stick' approach, according to officials.
This includes providing vast benefits to married couples with children, including priority access to education, healthcare and housing and cheaper products.
Meanwhile, the stick comes in the form of a ban on non-medically necessary abortion and increasing restrictions on women's' rights. Chinese officials have told companies to only hire women who have at least 2 children, according to business people who work in China. Divorce laws have also been rolled back to make it harder to obtain a divorce - you now have to demonstrate with evidence that the other person violated "moral standards such as fidelity." Additionally, Chinese courts have been told to treat men and women as equally valid choices for child custody
"The party wants everyone to know that if you do not have 2 children, and you are female, you are a failure to society. This is a true backstep for women's rights in China," Amelia Steinberger, who is an expert on China's demographic crisis and works for a US China-research thinktank, told the Guardian.
Chinese officials are also attempting to wipe out the practice of betrothal gifts and dowries, passing a law to make this illegal and to punish women who demand money at the start of a new marriage.

For single people, dating fatigue is a universal phenomenon. Hours of swiping left can lead to despair at the potential matches in your area. One city in Jiangxi, a province in eastern China, reckons that it has come up with a solution for the lovelorn or love-weary: a state-sponsored matchmaking service.
Guixi, a city of about 640,000 people, has launched an app that uses data on single residents to build a matchmaking platform. The app is known as “Palm Guixi” and includes a platform for organising blind dates, according to China Youth Daily, a state-run newspaper.
The app is part of a province-wide initiative to boost the marriage rate, which has been falling nationwide for the past decade. In 2021 there were 5.4 marriages per 1,000 people, compared with six in the US.
Elsewhere in Jiangxi, local governments are organising in-person events to get people mingling. In Gao’an city, about 100 young singles attended an event in Ruizhou Fuya park where they could dress up in traditional clothes, play games and “get closer” to each other as they felt “the profoundness of Chinese culture”.
One of the main pillars of the Jiangxi pilot is a campaign against high “bride prices”. In recent years the government has discouraged the traditional practice of a potential groom offering a bride’s family cash before marriage. The country’s civil code prohibits “the exaction of money or gifts in connection with marriage”. But in practice the tradition remains common, especially in rural areas. In 2022 Jiangxi topped an unofficial nationwide ranking of bride prices, with an average of 380,000 yuan (£45,000).
Through a combination of public awareness campaigns and limits on extravagant wedding ceremonies and banquets, Shicheng county claims to have virtually eliminated “betrothal gifts”.
Online reactions to the state-sponsored matchmaking service have been mixed. Many commenters on Weibo linked it to the government’s push to boost China’s rapidly falling birthrate. Chinese people are expected to “breed like pigs”, wrote one user.

What I find most impressive about them is that they are targeting the demos that actually need to breed, high achieving ones where most women have a career that makes having a family impossible till they're barren and single at 50. Those demos tend to heed the opinions of their women more and hold outsized influence so there will be significant domestic resistance, no matter how powerful Xi is. If they were just interested in pretending they found a solution they'd do stuff like give money for kids. Gets birth rates up but fricks the country when those babies become mouth breathing adults 20 years later.
