Why do rural chuds always imagine their place in urban society would be the trailerpark equivalent of city living?

I mean what are the options? An apartment which might be bigger than a trailer but has drawbacks of loud neighbors through the walls and less space than their houses? A townhouse which is prohibitively expensive in most urban areas and still less space than their houses? Any of these are a huge downgrade to a rural person. It may as well be like moving into a trailer park for them.

You're still talking about poor quality condos. In decent city condos or townhomes you don't have paper thin walls. This higher quality housing can be had for a reasonable amount given the higher wages available in cities, yes you'll be paying 60% more or so per sqft but wages in cities are often more than 60% higher. And you don't sweat the square footage as much because you're not meant to spend all your time in your home, how many mostly empty and unused rooms do you really need? What is in walking distance of a trailer park?

Yes, there are some things being in the sticks has a competitive advantage in, like total acreage, but there are likewise competitive advantages in cities, like much much higher top end wages. I agree that if you're a total loser cities aren't that good of a deal, but if you are just like a competent programmer, sales person, skilled tradesman or many other careers you can have yourself in a $500k+ townhome in a great neighborhood starting from zero in a couple years.

I guess I'm just speaking from my own experience. I currently am an urbancel exactly for the reasons you mention, but I do miss living rurally. I live in a mid-quality apartment (or so they claim) and I can hear my neighbors when they are shouting at the TV or playing music. I definitely miss the space and quiet I had, but I'm hoping at some point to save up for at some point at least a townhouse exactly to avoid the noise problem and some of the space problems I'm having. At least where I live townhouses are stupid expensive and I get a pretty high salary.
