twitter dev announced price hikes for the twitter api yesterday, after previously shitcanning free access to their v1.1 and v2 endpoints. a move they justified by professing how valuable the data on twitter is :marseybluecheck:

the new pricing tiers include one of the funniest I've personally seen, a "Hobbyist" level for $100/month :marseygolden2:. in addition to cucking bot developers with this pricing, they measure read requests to their api in tweets, not in requests. for the unaware, twitter api read requests can return multiple tweets, so a poorly developed bot could reasonably burn through this limit in under 100 requests.

for normal, well adjusted, non-transgender rDrama browsers, this basically means any account you see on twitter with the 🤖 Automated badge is now ruthlessly cucked by space daddy.

Yeah you're not paying $100 a month unless your bot is generating some kind of profit for your company. Doesn't have to be literal profit, but even increasing traffic or just advertising or something. Nobody's going to pay $1200 a year and not get anything out of it. aspie answer: since Nitter is read-only they use Twitter's private GraphQL endpoints (which aren't officially documented by twitter afaik) (https://github.com/zedeus/nitter/issues/783#issuecomment-1413736423). unless twitter starts restricting that API (not sure why they haven't tbh) nitter will be fine

ThousandBestLives think there may be no way too prove a request from a logged out user is coming from the actual twitter web app, so he can mimic any unauthenticated request in his version. Any secrets sent along with the requests by the legit app would be visible too the user and reproducible.

Tbf, the number of articles written about random twitter posts, all the studies (especially "hate rhetoric" research), I can only come to the same conclusion. If journ*lists and academics are using twitter as a reflection of the general populace instead of actually paying for surveys and the likes, then Daddy Musk is right. Plus, it's still cheaper than paying for a survey.

pretty yuge actually. there are dozens of "video downloader bots," things like threadreaderapp, reminder bots, hundreds of "[special interest] every hour" bots, etc. You didn't see 99% of bots in daily browsing because unlike reddit, bots on twitter aren't allowed to post replies unprompted
