I think shows like survivor are stupidly cheap to make.
You're not paying actors (they're contestants), script writers (producers write reality tv), union crews, not shooting in LA, etc.
I don't think they need a lot to break even, especially if they have a good season every few years.

Here in Poland we have a trend of hobos streaming their lives. I don't watch it and I don't understand the appeal, but it's quite popular and they make good money from donations. We call it "patostreamy". Here's a random snippet:
