Greetings Dramastrags!
Today I wanna talk about Nandos - a chain of restaurants which originated in Johannesburg South Africa, in 1987 by a Portuguese strag who plagiarized a Mozambique restaurant's recipes, before making his own. The name nandos is a nickname after the guy's surname Fernandos. It was never as big as KFC, but the chain quietly and steadily grew to great national success under his leadership, eventually even obtaining an international market in places like Bongland - where the english REALLY seemed to like the chain even more than South Africans. Generally South Africans tend to enjoy Nandos more than KFC, as the method of grilling is similar to the way the black indigenous people warm up their meat. There's a Nandos in every big city, and it's very successful ect ect.
But what we wanna focus on the Defcon 1 turbo butthurt that Nandos has caused for Southern Africans over the past two decades with their advertisements. You see Nandos has a pretty long history since the early 1990s of having batshit insane over the top adverts shown on SA T.V. Similar in nature to the Terry Crews over the top Old Spice deodorant adverts from america. These zany ads worked pretty well at establishing Nandos into the national conscience of the country, since they could never compete against the international behemoths of places such as MacDonalds or KFC otherwise. Nowadays Nandos' adverts are pretty rare, I presume because they are finally a large enough international conglomerate to not have to even advertise themselves, cuz i haven't seen a Nandos advert in a very long time. But then again, I avoid cable TV like the plague because it's invested with endless slogs of ads.
HONANRARY MENTION OF KANGAROOLAND:
Before we eff off to SA, I just wanna include that I found some Australian drama all the way back in 2002, where Nandos bussy-blasted the Kangaroo people there by highlighting in one of their adverts in Australia, the plight of Asylum seekers. Australia has pretty hardcore border control, and immigrants and refugees are always immediately detained upon entry for processing, to detect they aren't international criminals or lice-infected or whatever. Nandos Australia went full galaxy brain and deemed the philosophy that even bad publicity is good publicity, but poking the hornets nest in Aussie national discourse. Apparently a bunch of rightoids were upset, I have no idea.
NANDOS MOCKS JULIAS MALEMA IN ADVERTS:
Our big boi JuJu Malema has been a staple of Saffer uncivilized politics for over 15 years now. Originally he was the leader of the ANC Youth League - but the bastard was always inflamatory and preached extremism towards whites. He actively campaigned far left policies, which even the left wing ANC with their mixed economy model, found to be unpalatable. When he was elected as the President of the ANC Youth League back in 2008, oh boi was politics a whole lot more entertaining that year For like a year he gained infamy throughout the country throughout his public spats with the heads of the current ANC government. There was common sentiment among boers that he was a hidden blessing in disguise - for as long as the ANC was busy with internal slapfights they would be leaving us farmers in peace. Because back in 2008, the idea of Prescription without Compensation - the taking of white farmer lands without payment or warning or legal process - was gaining popularity throughout the youngest members of the ANC. But at the same time total collapse of the Zimbabwean economy was underway, and even the most hateful of ANC top command could see that a country that amputated all of its commercial farmers and food producers, was a highway to ruination, so the ANC opposed the ANC Youth League from 2008-2009. For many of the ANC top leaders they just found cushy jobs in their corrupt Nepo states, and they weren't keen on Malema rocking the boat.
The RSA public was of course appalled at this new grotesque display of a lack of dignity between our political leaders, in their petty back and forth public displays of their bad english speaking skills. Many people here have in retrospect after the Trump administration, called Julias Malema the black SA Trump, because of his tendency to have a perpetual monthly drama in the news involving him. And of course our best friends at Nandos thought to capitalize on this new circus in RSA news with a galaxy brained advertisement.
Nandos created an advert which showcased a puppet with Malema's visage and speaking pattern, and whoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo boi was there nuclear fallout. The usual complaints from the black population about the puppet being racist, because it had exagerated features. But this puppet was crafted after the english puppets which always mocked politicians via exaggerated facial features like:
Here's an australian comedy group mocking South African white leaders during the height of Aprtheid, and all of the mayo puppets had exaggerated facial features; I could not find the original video, it's been banished into the shadowrealm by U-tube. If any kangaroolanders could do me the favour of finding the original video, I'd be grateful The song is very swag. π΅πΌπ΅πΆ "I've never met a nice Saf African!" π΅πΌπ΅πΆ
Malema and his ANC Youth League cohorts went all like the sneed and rage was glorious. It was on the news 24/7. Looks like the ad worked. Eventually public pressure forced the cowards to take the ad down, since as usual Malema lowkey threatened to send his followers to physically destroy Nandos premises. https://mg.co.za/article/2009-04-23-nandos-bows-to-pressure-agrees-pull-julius-advert/
https://www.iol.co.za/news/politics/nandos-now-flighting-a-saucy-julius-ad-441355
Malema also sent his lawyers after Nandos, which further prompted them to cancel the advert, but not after they released another advert, with the puppet's face pixelated and the voice altered.
Hilariously the Malema puppet was later put on auction for charity by Nandos, and sold for R100 000 after 700 bids.

THERE A ZULU ON MY STOEP RACIST AD:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/There%27s_a_Zulu_On_My_Stoep
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Nqakula
Back in 2007 Nandos also made an advert called "there's a zulu on my stoep" in reference to the 1993 Leon Shuster comedy movie, wherein a white man and black man each wear perfect racebending masks and suits to escape crime or whatever, and had to face the tribulations of each other's races, it was supposed to poke fun at the race tension in RSA at the most stressful time. Nandos mocked the safety and security minister Charles Nqakula, which had been grileld by journ*lists for his crime stance, and the fact that under his leadership the crime in RSA had increased to one of the highest on earth.
"Nqakula was again criticized while he was in Burundi, promoting peace and democracy, while there was a spate of violent crime in Gauteng. This spate included the killings of an alarming number of people, including members of the South African Police Service killed while performing their duties. The criticism preceded a subsequent announcement by the minister that an all out effort would be made to quell the alarming increase of crime by 30 December 2006. 54 police officers have lost their lives in the first 7 months of 2006."
When reporters asked his opinion of the drama, he famously replied: "They can continue to whinge until they are blue in the face, they can continue to be as negative as they want to, or they can simply leave this country,"
I don't remember the advert, i was too young, and i couldn't find it through all the linkrot; but the basic premise was that Charles was acting like a white man, not taking the troubles of his black crime ridden communities seriously.
THE LAST DICTATORS ADVERT:
The Tzar bomba, and biggest detonation of drama of all the legendary Nandos adverts! The advert angered pretty much every brand of wingcuck on the surface of Southern Africa!
The 1-minute advert shows a lone Robert Mugabe sitting alone in a big fancy mansion during a holiday remising about the past when he had lots of comedic fun with other world famous dictators. He plays waterguns with Gaddaffi, makes sand angels with Saddam Hussein, sings karaoke with Mao Zedong, and pushes P. W. Botha (the last white president whom upheld Apartheid, before he was supplanted by F.W. de Klerk to end Apartheid) on a swing set. It's a pretty ballsy advert, and plenty of people had pretty strong feelings about it.
White afrikaans boomers protested that the advert was inaccurate, and that there was totally democratic rule under P.W. Botha's rule, with absolute zero sense of irony. Chinks in SA were too small a minority for anyone to give a shit, but they were sneeding about Dear Leader not being shown all dignified like. Black pan-african wingcucks sneeded because the advert DARED to show african leaders as dictators, and sneeded that all of the countries shown like Libya was totally democratic and not held under military might of Gaddafi, or that the brutal dictator Idi Amin didn't genocide in Uganda and wasn't a dictator ect ect.
Many black ANC wingcucks sneeded that Nandos dared show an african leader like Mugabe to be just was villanious as the white devil evil apartheid leaders! Black people are totally wholesome all the time Sneed sneed sneed. It was glorious.
But the biggest shitshow was in Zimbabwe itself. Mugabe reacted the way like all dictators do, just like Putin did with the famous clown Putin meme, or the way Xi reacted to the Winnie the Pooh meme. Of course in Zimbabwe itself, the situation for the poor Nandos workers there was quite serious, as militant Mugabe supporters were calling for violent action against the chain in the country of Zimbabwe. Nandos corporate had to quickly backtrack and pull out the advert, for the safety of their employees there, and issue a wimpy soggy apology for Mugabe cabinet pretty quickly. Our buddy Zuma was best pals with Mugabe, and enforced that the South African Nandos chains also remove the advert. Of course the Streisand effect meant that the Nandos ad became forbidden fruit, and every Saffer teenager with a Blackberry and crusty flipphone would watch it during the lunchtime on their school playground.
https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-africa-16002239
NANDOS MOCKS ZUMA:
Back in 2016, there was immense controversy about President Jacob Zuma involving the discovery of his home mega mansion - Putin style - which he had built using syphoned taxpayer's money. The Nkandla homestead would be a source of drama for like 5 years straight, but back in 2016 Zuma went full r-slur and suggested paying back only part of the taxpayers money instead of addresseing the notion of corruption that must have taken place for a president to even be able to steal money in the 1st place. Nandos jumped on the bandwagon pretty quickly, and ended up pissing off Zuma's fanatically loyal conservative Zulu voting base.
https://www.sapeople.com/2016/02/03/nandos-advert-offers-president-zum-paybackthemoney-south-africa/
Not much happened compared to the Malema spat, but a lot of zulu and ANC wingcucks were sneeding in their respective languages on facebook and twatter.
THE NANDOS XENOPHOBIA ADVERT:
As bad as South Africa is, the rest of the African continent isn't fairing so much better, and for the past 20 years a metric shitload of refugees have flooded our borders, congolese, nigerians, and especially Zimbabweans. As Zimbabwe economically collapsed by 2010, it was estimated that by 2010 there were between 5-10 million of them as illegal aliens in RSA, some seeking residency at the Department of Home Affairs, and others just illigally hiding out in the various rural towns and farms for work. Our dogshit military and police force are so lazy and incompetent that they have completely neglected the South African northern borders. The are no patrols, and the fences bordering Mozambique and Zimbabwe have all been stolen for scrapmetal while the lazy soldiers lay in the sun baking like a beach tourist. I would know, I was literally there surveying 3 years ago. When the Limpopo river is completely dry, you can just walk across the sand banks. North of Musina, there is an orange farm called Katina-Alith, where zimbabweans walk across the river to buy from the white boers there, and walk back lol. The farmers don't care, the police don't care, it's all happy days!
Anyways for context, in South Africa, a lot of farmers/boers tend to favour Zimbabwean workers for several reasons. As most of them are refugees with nothing but the clothes on their backs as they were chased by Mugabes military, they are humble and hardcore hard workers, whom are willing to do anything without complaint to feed themselves and their families. This is in start contrast against the local black zulus and xhosas whom are very entitled to to grants or land or jobs. They fail to see that even the oppresive Afrikaners and the Apartheid regime worked very hard to erect the previous Union of South African, and don't understand that much work still needed to be done after SA became a Democracy. I know that's cruel of me to say for many black south africans whom live in stagnant poverty, but it's very difficult to explain the strange mentality that South African black peeps have in relation to work ethics. In contrast Zimbabweans are all highly educated and can speak fluent english, because the old Rhodesian education system was exceptional. Thus boers, from the poorest white, to the richest farmer, favour working from them, since they can actually do things like count, and the farmer can rely on them to become middle managers or tractor drivers for him. I'm not joking about the counting thing either, black south africans have math passrate on average of 30-50%. This is because all of the traditional schools' teachers are worthlessly lazy and just show up to schools in black dominated regions to collect a monthly check, and leave their poor zulu and xhoza students in limbo. And the powerful RSA Teacher's Union fricks any attempt at reform. There's no nice way of putting it; the new generation of Xhozas and Zulus are quite frankly....stupid.
Because of this, in places like Gauteng, Kwazulu-Natal, Mapumalanga, and the Free State. Illegal Zimbabweans slowly and incrimentally came to be chosen as a workforce over their local peers. This had bred resentment towards foreigners even as our Commie friends of the EFF preached that we should allow workers into the country for a united proletariat. This resentment started to explode into full blown Xenophobia, and a series of violent attacks began to occur against foreigners in the sketchy parts of Joburg, and all of the rural regions of RSA. Even african foreigners whom were here legally, and had obtained visas or citizenship were not always safe. A national debate and sneed fest began between all of the african commentators in RSA radio about how modern black south africans found themselves in the world and the morality of xenophobia.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_South_African_xenophobic_riots
Finally in 2015 there was an explosion of xenophobic attacks, which culminated into full blown hardcore race riot violence between black africans in Durban. This was directly a result of the Zulu King https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodwill_Zwelithini opening his gob, and complaining about outlanders stealing Saffer jobs. You see the zulus of RSA are the biggest and most populous demographic, very conservative, and take their royalty very very seriously. And what he says goes, and zulus follow it. Even Zuma had to take second place to his will. This has of course caused problems with the rest the ANC supporters from other black groups like Sothos, Pedis and vendas since according to the ANC manifesto all africans, men and women should be equal, so how is it that there are kings and chieftans still ruling like a fuedal lord in a new modern democracy. But that's another story.
The 2015 xenophobic attacks were pretty violent - zulus went full brownshirts and Night of the Long Knives on the shops and stalls of any foreigners and attacked immigrants in general. The violence became so infamous across RSA, that the diplomatic tensions from other countries the refugees were from was even strained. Nigeria, Kenya, Mozambique and Malawi even repatriated their citizens amidst fear of further reprisals. A lot of woke black and white people had their brains melted as they didn't know what to make of such a complex situation when black african were so cruel to their fellow black africans.
https://www.latimes.com/world/africa/la-fg-south-africa-foreigners-20150417-story.html
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2015/4/17/thousands-rally-in-south-africa-against-xenophobia
A rally was later held as protest against xenophobia in Durban.
https://ewn.co.za/2015/04/16/Zulu-Kings-comments-taken-to-task
The Zulu king came under media fire when he said no-no things about foreigners
Later he backtracked like a b-word, saying the media misquoted him, and that he was totally not at fault for the xenophobic explosion as a consequence of his words.
And then of course or friends Nandos decided to place themselves square in the middle of this countrywide drama, after all what could go wrong
It's a great advert, and once again it caused great butthurt amongst everybody! Many of the xhozas, vendas and other bantu groups are illiterate and refuse to believe the history that many groups migrated from 1800 onwards down south past Limpopo from Mozambique in South Africa as nomadic groups, the notion that the Dutch was quite literally in South Africa before the Zulus for example makes them shit bricks in anger!
Other sneed involved the usual anger that black hypocracy was being pointed out in their xenophobic cruelty, and that they behave similar to their white counterparts when things are disfavorable against them. Many bantu groups now occupy previous Khoi-san and Hottentot homelands which was conquered from the 1750-1850 period onwards, and many modern black groups explode in anger when confronted that they also dabbled a little bit in "colonialism" whoopsie
But of course the zulus being called out directly in this advert was the main vulcanic source of screetching on social media.

Anyways I'm closing off with a collection of funny Nandos ads. Good Night!

Yep, people here have a problem. In San Antonio people also drink alcohol in terrifying amounts, on top of all the tea and soda. People complain when an establishment doesn't serve alcohol before noon. I've seen people order hundreds of dollars of alcohol at a 4 top, it's crazy.
Then you also see them in Bill Millers drive-thu filling up the reusable tea cups (32 oz btw) and drinking soda for lunch.

Fantastic effort post @kaamrev, love learning about developing countries
This is such an important point and probably very difficult for you to explain to foreigners without them thinking youβre a racist. South Africa as it is wouldnβt exist without the Afrikaners, it is a settler state like the US and Latin America in general. Nowadays itβs seems like the generation of leaders currently in command of the ANC were all anti apartheid activist during their youth, that will naturally mean a lot of resentment, combined with populism and corruption itβs a recipe for disaster, they donβt seem interested in actually creating an educated black middle class, rather theyβll just continue to exploit racial resentment while not actually doing much to improve the lives of the majority because so far it has worked for them, no party is an electoral threat to them. I hope future generations of South Africans citizens and leaders will be able leave apartheid era resentments in the past while not forgetting it obviously ( knowing oneβs history is always important), but is a super hard task.
Anyways, just a long post from a fellow βBRICSβ foreigner so I may be wrong in some aspects, regardless of that good luck!

Thinking about it, history is filled with multicultural multiethnic authoritarian empires (Romans, Persians, ottomans, etc.). But multiethnic democracies are newer and unstable. The US is a special case, whites were the overwhelming majority (~85-90%) for most of its history and a very dominant force, this changed slowly after 1960s with new migration waves. In the early 20th century, previously disadvantaged groups like Irish and Italians were integrated into the βwhiteβ category, avoiding ethnic strife. Something similar is happening to Latinx and Asians, who are now βwhite adjacentβ. An unstable, crumbling case is Lebanon.

To be fair, apartheid SA was only a developed country for whites. Apparently the government wanted to create separate ethnostates for blacks, but it turned out to be impossible, the economy depended too much on black labor. I know is an /r/neoliberal cliche recommendation, but βWhy Nations failβ has a whole chapter explaining SA extractive institutions and its legacy. That being said, their military back then was the strongest in the entire continent, and nukes gave the regime leverage on an Increasingly hostile international community.

You see the same thing with Indians in Canada. People used to getting payments of tens of thousands of dollars every few years don't like the idea of having to work 40 hours a week for less (because taxes) so in between these handouts a lot of them just do frick all but drink and frick (in the north literally 75% of Indians are 25 or under).
The issue is in some places Indians (who aren't paying into this system) make up 1/5th of the population but still expect these hand outs. Add on to this the issue of mothers striped of status (Indian women who married white men lost their Indian status (and were often exiled from the rez they lived on for race mixing) because having a white husband they no longer needed special welfare, well the gov went back on this and said anyone who's mother had lost status up to 10 generations ago can reclaim it and pass it to their children.
Well a lot of those people are white. Like 1/16th or 1/32 Indian but have the same status as a full blood, this leads to all sorts of arguments with the bands they belong to (who often don't consider these people real Indians) about hunting rights (they have the same ones as full bloods) and affirmative action

It's not like the zulus and xhosas dont have a fabulous and rich history and culture, but because they control RSA education, a lot of the genocide that the zulus committed when they moved south under the internationally recognized Shaka is washed clean, a lot of emphasis is black in RSA history books is placed on dutch violence when they moved inland, but ignores that the dutch and hottentots and other matabeles tribes got along well. Most of the land the dutch/proto-boers "conquered" was bought from the natives who didn't farm, and many tribes would aligned with the boers against the zulus in the same fashion that south american tribes united with the Spanish against the bloodthirsthy aztecs
This is not to whitewash the brutality if my own ancestors, or that they didn't commit atrocities or never took land by force, but the reality is much more complex as to how they became the dominat group when moving inlands to south africa

Yeah that makes sense. It's always a shame when these nuances are intentionally censored or excluded from public education history books. I think the U.S. generally does a good job of highlighting both the good and the bad (maybe extra emphasis on the bad in many cases) when it comes to our history, including wars with and genocidal acts against the Native Americans, slavery, colonization, and wars against foreign countries for various reasons. Even now the media would have people believe that certain states are trying to whitewash that history or forbid discussing things like slavery but that's largely untrue (saying that slavery happened and saying that the country was founded on slavery are two different things).

Frick all y'all crawling your way in here to downmarsey, just because you and your community haven't been negatively affected by the police doesn't mean they can't be or don't affect others - and being in a LEGO subreddit can't stop shit. Being able to ignore and compartmentalize bad things is a privilege. Cowards

Afrikaaners created a self-fulfilling prophecy.
1. They optimized the state for ignoring mass opinion and extracting the national wealth to the benefit of a particular ethnic group.
2. They refused to teach the majority of the population how to function in modern society
3. They never foresaw that one day the people in #2 might use the state apparatus in #1 to frick them over.
That Namibia is one the most competent states in Africa proves that the current state of RSA is totally avoidable

Most of the west (vgh) is heading towards Brazil and not SA and yet I wonder the average Bong can look around London and think "oh yeah this is fine". At least Africans have the balls to race riot when they notice themselves getting replaced.

They have bred all the fight out of the bongs. You can't even buy a spoon without a loisence. They have been told things are good, so things are good for 85-90% of bongs. And there are real consequences for saying things that hurt bongs feelings in bongland
