making sure other americans won't drive your car is the reason you buy a manual in america, not sure on what that says about this relationship

It is an objective fact that manual is more fun to drive and automatics are for fat people

Idk how to drive manual :marseysad: I mean I understand how it works, you press the clutch and you change the gears to go different speeds but I’ve never actually driven one :marseyzoomer:

There’s no reason to know how to drive manual just like there’s no reason to know how to use an abacus or how to use the stars to find your way around your yard.

How much of a pain in the butt is it to drive a manual? I've only ever driven automatics but recently I've been considering buying a Miata

It's not hard, it just takes practice

I know it's not hard, but is it tedious or annoying? Do you ever feel like you don't want to drive or think that next time you'll get an automatic because the manual is bothering you?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Yes, there is a reason automatic is almost universal these days.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

No. At least I don't think so. But I've been driving manual for decades. You may find it annoying at first

I have both, auto is nice for commutes and stop start traffic but it's not a necessity. my weekend car is a manual.

>tedious or annoying?

You don't think about it while driving because you've been doing it for 10+ years so youre basically on autopilot.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Tbh yes, if youre driving in heavy traffic it sucks. It also sucks when you first start and youre not good at hillstarts.

Almost all of my cars are manual but I always keep at least one auto for boring just-going-to-work stuff. Automatic blows butt for fun cars. The last time I had a weekend car or project that was automatic was like 10 years ago because they are objectively inferior

Autocopers will say new DCTs and 10 speeds are just as good as manual, but they arent. Porsche is pretty close with PDK but thats about it

I drive an automatic cayman for track day weekends and never feel like I was losing time for it. In fact a guy that races open wheels drove it and said the thing shifted faster than he could even do the paddle shifter

It is incredibly annoying if you live in the city. An absolute blast if you are low pop though.

Definitely tedious at times but the question is do you enjoy the control and direct feel you get when driving for pleasure more.

I daily a modified WRX Wagon, so likely similar to an NA or NB Miata. It is amazing in general, but it fricking sucks to drive in traffic if there are hills. Stop and go is fine as long as it’s flat, but holy frick those metered uphill on ramps are torture on my clutch.

Another difficult situation is stop signs on steep hills. Starting on a hill is not that hard if you use the hand brake to keep yourself from going backwards, but it’s pretty difficult to do a quick sub-second stop. You either need to do a rolling stop, which is fine if nobody is around, or fully stop, hold the hand brake, and get going again, which takes an awkward amount of time and makes people think you are yielding to them.

Anyway, Miatas are badass, buy it. I want to pick up an NB at some point.

With some practice they aren’t bad, mostly learning how to use clutch and brake to take off when stopped on a hill with a car on your butt and stop and go city driving they kind of gets annoying after awhile.

I have driven a lot of different manual vehicles because I am a farmcel so we always had old pickups and semis around and unironically the easiest vehicle to learn manual in is a diesel pick-up truck because they have enough torque where you can dump the clutch in 3rd gear and still take off fine. I used to have a ‘99 Dodge Cummins and you literally only needed 3rd and 6th gear in that truck.
