There's gotta be something ironic about this right?

159 platinums

How much did that cost?

If my math is right, the platinums alone generated $1140 for Reddit.

No wonder Reddit is so broke. One of the most gifted post in Id say at least a month and it's still just a few thousands? Redditadmins might as well be doing it for free too at this point...

6 dollars per platinum, unless you’re buying the 200 dollar reddit coin deal or something for bonus coins… so about 950 bucks!!

Oh yeah and the 11 awards next to the platinum are 50 bucks each… :marseyscared:

Someone should make a web app that does the math

You could even charge money to use it without paying for the API calls

I get $7.20 per plat as it's 1800 coins and 500 coins is $1.99.

They have a β€œfinest option” advertised to get you 1 plat for 6 dollars, so I’m assuming that for the minimum

Doubtful. A lot of people have coins they got for free(!). I have like, 50k or something stupid and I've never paid for reddit.

Edit: I'd like to remind folks that Apollo does have a tipping function. I know Christian deserves every bit of support we throw his way.

one last grift for the guy who already made money using someone else's platform :marseywholesome:

Is it a grift or the ultimate cuckery if you take somone else's work and then make it objectively better in every way to such a degree that more people use that service instead of the official one

I'm guessing Reddit was too broke to just buy him out.

Why the frick would they buy him out though? That’s basically a good will gesture. It’s not like they are going to have two official apps. One dev in a giant company like that will perish unless Reddit admits they suck af software and make him head of app dev… but that’s basically a manager job not a solo dev skill

If we’ve learned anything from history the people will accept it. They don’t have an alternative.

I would've fired the whole mobile development team and made my offer whatever the sum of all their compensation was to buy him out.

Gigabrain moment.

Rember when reddit acted like it was smart people social media.

Thats out of the window.

Beyond that, in the earlier caring about internet things / agenda posting days a lot of people didn't want it to become social media period. Text based web forum was what people were there for.

But then there was that study I can't remember the link to that said redditors were horribly unmonetizeable. And obviously the people who needed / need to make money off of reddit would prefer paypigs as their target consoomer.

I get trying to monetize redditors. But why increase bloat so much? Why have multiple sites. Why eveeything.

Why not try to keep reddit as light as possible and try to find hen ways to milk cash out of them?

I bet reddit of 2010 would be as valuable as 2023 for data farming. But way cheeper to run

I agree with you but neither of us were sitting in the right seats to make that call. The feds got Swartz and then Pao took over and that was the nail in the coffin.

Even for feds. Lightweight reddit would have been better. I cant really see upside on modern reddit for amyone.
