I could speak (or write) for half an hour about how the API changes are a net benefit, & how they will force Reddit to internalize the support systems & anti-abuse infrastructure they’ve dumped on users for a decade, as well as improve user privacy. I have a position.

The people promoting these blackouts over “Reddit is ending abuse of their API” sure aren’t protesting hatred and legalized harassment. I do like the back of the envelope critique of the API pricing though. I honestly have no idea what a reasonable cost is here but he does a good job of showing that Reddit's new price is too high.

Unlocking the app is $5 bucks for a lifetime, there's also a monthly subscription / Ultra plan that I doubt many used but considering :

1.5 million users at a modest conversion of 5% of users who pays for the app is 50,000 paid users at $5 a head is $250,000 of which he's paid $0 to Reddit. This doesn't include any of the bozos who he did catch into his Ultra plan which is like $12.00 a year ongoing.

So despite how butt blasted buddy is who dev'ed the Apollo app, it probably paid for his house while having no return to Reddit Inc themselves.
