I still don't have any idea what apollo does or did for itself, reddit or anything. Even though reddit has been covered with cryposts about it, going dark etc etc not a single one I ever found explained it in any way.

I'm glad it generated so much fun drama though. Anything that makes redditors cry is a good thing.

Big financial loss for that dev. If what I'm reading is correct, Apollo has as many as 1.5 million daily users active on the app.

Unlocking the app is $5 bucks for a lifetime, there's also a monthly subscription / Ultra plan that I doubt many used but considering :

1.5 million users at a modest conversion of 5% of users who pays for the app is 50,000 paid users at $5 a head is $250,000 of which he's paid $0 to Reddit. This doesn't include any of the bozos who he did catch into his Ultra plan which is like $12.00 a year ongoing.

So despite how butt blasted buddy is who dev'ed the Apollo app, it probably paid for his house while having no return to Reddit Inc themselves.

The best bit's afterwards with the "quiet" term:

Me: No, no, I'm sorry. Yeah one more time. I was just saying if the opportunity cost of Apollo is currently $20 million a year. And that's a yearly, apparently ongoing cost to you folks. If you want to rip that band-aid off once. And have Apollo quiet down, you know, six months. Beautiful deal. Again this is mostly a joke, I'm just saying if the opportunity cost is that high, and if that is something that could make it easier on you guys, that could happen too. As is, it's quite difficult.

Ozzie: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I hear you. I think it's… I don't know what you mean by quiet down. I find that to be-

Me: No, no, sorry. I didn't mean that to-

Ozzie: I'm going to very straightforward to you too, it sounds like a threat. And I'm just like "Oh interesting". Because one of the things we're trying to do is say "You have been using our API free of cost for many, many years and we have absolutely sanctioned - you have not broken any rules." And now we're changing our perspective for what we're telling you - and I know you disagree with it. That hey, we want to operate on a thing that is financially, you know, footing. And so hopefully you mean something completely different from what I said when you say like "go quietly", I just want to make sure.

Me: How did you take that, sorry? Could you elaborate?

Ozzie: Oh, like, because you were like, "Hey, if you want this to go away".

Me: I said "If you want Apollo to go quiet". Like in terms of- I would say it's quite loud in terms of its API usage.

Ozzie: Oh, go quiet as in that. Okay, got it. Got it. Sorry.

Me: Like it's a very-

Ozzie: Yeah, that's a complete misinterpretation on my end.

Me: Yeah. No, no, it's all good.

Ozzie: I apologize. I apologize immediately.

Me: No, no, no, it's all good.

But then later we hear that the chadmins apparently "forgot" they apologized to him (or more likely a different chadmin didn't hear the call all the way through), and say he threatened them lol.

It's opportunity cost, not realized cost. Reddit could be making $20 million off of the users on Apollo, that doesn't mean they're saving $20 million if Apollo shuts off.

So you can see they were never serious or honest. If you take what reddit says at face value, buying Apollo out for $10 million is FREE $10 million in profit ($20 mil - $10 mil).

Paying Apollo makes no sense. What would you pay them for? To shut down? Reddit can shut them down for free.

Jump in the discussion.

That's clear to everyone now. The part that's scummy on reddit is that they lied about their intentions and then slandered the dev. If they came out and stated they wanted to kill Apollo, they'd have way less blowback if they just said it straight up.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Reddit could be making $20 million off of the users on Apollo

This assumes Apollo users will pay, doesn't it? At the moment Reddit just has a tonne of lost ad revenue to Apollo users. Presumably if enough of them are forced to switch to the proper Reddit app they'll start seeing ads and start making Reddit money. If everyone was willing to pay for every service they use online then there'd be no need for this huge industry based on advertising.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Virtually no one is willing too pay. Apple users are still more willing too pay than Android though. Apple has about half the global install base of Google Play devices, but the App Store still consistently generates more than double the Play Store's revenue, it's been thatbway since the figures started being compared over a decade ago.

Reddit will still make more money from the influx of users seeing ads, but Apollo being iOS based means that a higher percentage may pony some money up.

Well, no, they have a reason to call him: to tell him he needs to pay up.

(((Lawyers))) are criminally expensive but it's still cheaper to have them send a letter with ChatGPT then have the CEO call someone

Well in a way, all the bad press Reddit is now getting is a kind of leverage.

It makes no sense at all, and there's so many gaps in logic here, so I definitely understand how someone who's most likely ESL would interpret this as a confusing threat.

He's saying that Apollo is being charged $20 million a year because that's what it costs Reddit to maintain it. That's obviously not true, and I think he knows that, but this isn't a "gotcha" because I don't think Reddit ever claimed that they were just charging these apps at-cost. Everyone knows this is a profit-based decision.

Not only that, but like you said, Apollo is being shut down by Reddit already. Why would they pay him $10 million for something that's naturally going to happen? Like even as a joke, this offer doesn't make any sense.

It's very impotent and shows no understanding of the situation, especially for someone who's livelihood is being destroyed by it.

He wants them to buy his app doofus.

They don't want his app lol, they want to kill it. How are people not getting this?

Reddit has an app, and it comes with ads that make them money. They're killing all other apps, for free, by enacting this policy. They don't need to buy him out.

It shows reddit in a bad light, not apollo. If reddit thinks they can make > $20 million in profit on Apollo users $10 million is a bargain.

If they think they can't actually make $20 million in profit, why would they charge Apollo that much?

You’re an idiot for sure

If reddit thinks they can make > $20 million in profit on Apollo users $10 million is a bargain.

But they don't even say that. They say the damage Apollo inflicts on them is worth $20m.

And they have the option to bring those damages to 0 by either demanding $20m or paying him $10m.

If reddit thinks they can make > $20 million in profit on Apollo users $10 million is a bargain.

Even when you frame it like that, it still doesn't make sense, because reddit obviously knows that Apollo users will just switch to the official reddit app.

It's just stupid reasoning all around. I can only assume he's being purposefully ignorant towards them to try and get them to admit that their end goal is to just shut down all third party apps, but the way he's going about doing it is stupid. He should be more direct, asking specifically if they view his app as an asset that brings people to reddit, or if they view his app as a threat that needs to be shut down. Because if they lie to him and say they view it as an asset, he can directly attack them for acting against (what they claim to be) their own self interests by shutting the app down and not offering an affordable price.

Remember API cost is also there to reduce maintenance cost by devs making more efficient apps

Jump in the discussion.

Server cost by API usage, by reddit's own admission, is negligible.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Well no. It is still a cost and there is no reason to drive that cost either by making API usage free.

Why would they not? Apollo doesn’t benefit Reddit in any way. It’s just a massive drain on their resources. It doesn’t serve their ads and it hammers them with requests.

While apollo is almost certainly a big net drain having your website be browseable on a neat modern looking functional app is worth something. Shit, the official reddit app being complete shit is a bigger meme than old search used to be. Reddit is absolutely on the market to absorb a 3rd party app into the official one, this guy just asked for waaay too much.

It’s worth nothing. People can use the official app just fine and they probably will once Apollo shuts down.

It’s an opening offer. I bet he would accept 10-30% of that. It has to be worth something to Reddit since they totally fail at modern ui design. Reddit also sucks at business. I can’t wait to own Reddit shares and reportmaxx them to the SEC for not addressing my concerns. I’m going to bring up the past of mods and admins and why that is a a concern to shareholders on earnings calls. I can not wait to be the most annoying Reddit owner

Right, exactly.

They were dishonest in wanting to work with Apollo. They wanted to give the impression of being supportive instead of just saying outright they wanted to shut it down.

He might be able to sue for tortious interference since he’s had to break a ton of contracts with his users so he probably wants some compensation for that, but I’d need a real lawyer’s opinion like Penny Bardfinnius Oaken Esq. to be sure

As a true and honest lawyer theres no way that I can make a contract with someone thats entirely dependent on a third party who agreed to none of this and then sue the third party if they ever try to update the thing im using
