I think the admins have realized just how screwed they are here. They allow subs to have NSFW content, so they can't complain or wiggle out of it. The only real option is to go the way of tumblr and ban porn entirely, and taking that hit pre-IPO.
This might be the first time the admins look at reverting the API change, it's probably a lesser hit to business.
