I liked Zelazny's take in the Dilvish stories: that a powerful mage uses his name to summon and bind various demons, and often has short patience with them being tardy. So when you speak his name any demons who hear you through the ether drop whatever they were doing and hurry to your location, and are also very unamused that you bothered them for no reason.
