Communism was much harsher on women than capitalism ever was. Women were supposed to work like men but still do their traditional duties: cook, clean, raise children and take care of the old/sick family members. As much as redditors jerk themselves raw over muh social programs no one wanted their elderly parents to end up at the mercy of the state.

Soviet Union was kinda good at gender equality in some ways.
