Venezuala has always been undiversified and reliant on oil exports. This goes back way, way further than Chavez or Maduro. If you blame this on them you're unironically r-slurred.

Chavez and Maduro attempted to build a social democracy in a third world country using this oil money. Norway does it, so why not them? This was problem number 1. Social democracy can only work in the West because of the privileges the west currently enjoys. I can explain this if you want.

Venezuela was definitely more diversified before Chavez, the focus of nationalization and modernization of the oil industry was pursued heavily at the other economic sectors

And of course sanctions would hurt, that's the point and were put in place because of Bolivarians/Chavistas being r-slurred and inept as well as corrupt and cruel.

And Costa Rica seems to have a semi-social democratic system in place and they're mostly fine.

Also, Venezuela did not pursue social democracy, it pursued socialism as form of government, economic and social organization and ideology, Chavez did not spend the majority of his life hiding in the jungle just so it would become Latin American Norway.
