We need to talk about r/collapse

Some of you guys know this already but r/collapse is recommended to all new users when they join.

r/collapse and r/collapsesupport are full of depressed and otherwise mentally ill people who have convinced themselves that the world is ending to rationalize the way they feel. One of my friends IRL is like this and it's truly sad. I don't know why the frick reddit recommends these subs and I really think it does actual harm to people.

I've been in the situation where my mental problems were exacerbated by online interaction when I had body image issues and browsed /fit/, 4chan's fitness board. It's nearly impossible to get better unless you stop interacting with people who have the exact same issues and rationalizations as you.

Do you think emailing reddit chadmins would get them to stop recommending these subs? Am I a strag for caring about the wellbeing of r*dditors? Let me know what you think. :marseydepressed:

r/BoringDystopia used to be like this.

Now it's mostly r/antiwork bitching about how their employers expects them to work 8h a day, and how the landowner expects them to pay rent. Such a dystopia...

It's also a commie sub, like the entire premise is that society will collapse because we're currently living under late stage capitalism

I think there's also an r/postcollapse or something where they all talk about developing skills to survive a post collapse dystopian world. Stuff like I'm a farmer, and mechanic engineer, and paramedic. I dunno I remember seeing it like 10 years ago

That place if full of doomers with very little idea of where the word is headed on policy and technology, the world isn't going to end unless you live somewhere in the 3rd world or China.

I’m extremely fit and a generally happy person and I still think our world is on the verge of collapse. Kind of the ultimate in dramacoin.

No, the more redditors that take comfort in the rope, the better. We must not indulge in bourgeois sentimentality.

I can't believe I'm saying this because burn Reddit down, but r/collapse keeps Reddit worth visiting.

Their news thread provides advance warning of shortages and gives you a good idea what to stock up on if you're preparing for another situation where you don't want to leave the house for a month or so.

Am I a cute twink for caring about the wellbeing of r*dditors?

No (well yes) but hiding information doesn't make it go away, and the r/collapse weekly threads is essentially a news desk. Yeah there are rando crazy posts that you have to YMMV into ignoring, but the majority is good.

That’s all that matters at this point. A much better use of your time would be encouraging people to stop being online, rather than target any one sub.

Well, to be fair, if the world continues along the existing trajectory, it will end, or at least life as we know it will cease to exist. Undoubtedly human beings will still survive and nation-states will continue to exist, it's just that life is really going to suck for them.

If r/collapse helps educate people about the tangible steps needed to solve this problem or mitigate its effects, I think it's a good thing. If it's just getting people trapped in a depression spiral when they don't do anything constructive, it's probably not too helpful.

Either way, I don't understand your desire to make them less accessible. Since when has rdrama been pro-censorship?

There's a difference between censorship and not suggesting it to thousands of new users

OK, fair point. Do you think Reddit should suggest anything? And if so, what?

Or do you think it should just have a directory guide that helps users find what they want?

  1. A directory seems like a sane idea
  2. Why not recommend r/picsofhorsedicks and r/gfur?

I think that content that can harm the reader shouldn't be promoted. simple as.

I've just browsed r/collapse and you're totally right - it's odd to suggest that shit to new users. People are making prophecies out of some pretty mundane/regular things.

I agree with you - it seems like a recipe for disaster, and a good way for many people to fry any semblance of mental well-being. (And that's without even considering just how neurodivergent the typical Redditor is.)

Do you think emailing reddit chadmins would get them to stop recommending these subs?

Outside of a few specific issues, I don't think Reddit cares about anything that doesn't threaten investor relations.

The sad fact is that content like r/collapse will create high levels of engagement - just like hyper-partisan "rage-bait" news stories. Reddit thrives on this content, even when it comes at the detriment to the wellbeing of their users.

Am I a cute twink for caring about the wellbeing of r*dditors?

Yeah, you're definitely a cute twink. But you're a caring cute twink. :marseyblowkiss:
