In peak summer cycling season I couldn't imagine eating that much shit in a day. I simply don't understand how fatties have the appetite. Is it like a drug addiction where they have a tolerance or something?

Basically. The more you eat, the fatter you get, and the fatter you get, the more your body sends signals to eat. Its easy to overshoot the line for "maintenance level" calories at any size. When you need one burger for your maintenance calories per meal, its easy to overlook the fries making you fatter. When you need 5 burgers for your maintenance calories per meal, you probably ordered 6 because you're not tracking calories to begin with.
It also doesn't help that sugar is in fricking everything and just spikes your Ghrelin production to increase hunger while reducing Peptide-YY production to suppress your appetite.
