The falsifying business records isn't a crime in of itself. It's civil fraud. The crime was doing it to cover up a crime, and the actual crime is some weird esoteric NY common law recognition of stripper payments as campaign donations (or a biased court).
Supposedly the jurors were instructed that they need not agree on the crime the defendant had originally committedโ they just needed to believe him guilty of a crime, and that this was used to cover it up.
I'm absolutely sure it holds up in court but it's so divorced from common sense. Like the resisting arrest charges thrown at people for saying no to an unlawful arrest.

Being a liar is not illegal, and fricking aging porn stars is not illegal, and paying them money to keep it quiet is not illegal, but lying under oath on tax forms and business records and FEC submittals is illegal.
Trump being a fatbag old horndog is not really what got him in trouble here, so much as being a congenital compulsive liar. Lying isn't usually illegal, except when you explicitly swear under penalty of law to tell the truth. Then it's illegal to lie.
