Guy pours his own concrete driveway, it does not go well

Either pay 10k or do a driveway yourself. I chose diy.

For context, it's 30' by 18' by 6" and I've never formed, tied rebar, poured and finished. I've done some of each but never all together.

Contractor wanted 10k.

1 day rental of bobcat to degrass $300

Form and rebar #4 with 2' on center was $300

Concrete was 9.5 yards for $2000

Second truck was 3 yards for $600

Labor was $800

I saved 6k

How'd I do?

:#marseybrainlet:

I like the 2 foot area where you tried to finish it and just said frick it, good enough πŸ‘

Perfect is the enemy of good, and comparison is the thief of joy. It's not perfect, and I'm really happy to have learned something new.

Great approach, I've done some shit jobs for myself in the past but I learned a frick ton. As long as you learn, you win.

Couldn't agree more.

:#marseyclueless:

That's a great textured finish. You won't have to worry about slipping when it's wet or frozen

:#marseyxd:

you may have actually cost yourself 4k. time will tell

How so?

I think he is implying it is going to crack and go to shit this costing you $4k plus more to have it redone.

The contractor who bid the job told me after I said I was doing it myself "right on, don't worry how it looks. Two things I've learned in this trade after 20 years, women are going to b-word and concrete is going to Crack."

I live by a simple phrase, "you can have it fast, good or cheap. Pick two"

I chose fast and cheap, I know it ain't going to be good.

Everything has, have you seen the price of lumber? Insane

It always spikes around :marseykilldozerhappy: day. People horde it in fear of the spirit of the kill dozer. Market levels out a bit after a month or two.

Concrete is like $150/yd. And that's for commercial guys. Probably a lot more if you don't buy millions of dollars worth every year. Shits expensive.

A small batch yeah but mixing for a slab pour is trickier because by the time you mix the last batch thr first one is starting to set so you'll have trouble spreading it

It's not impossible, with 2 day laborers you could do it. Would just have to keep the previous pours wet

Or make up formwork and pour it in multiple slabs so you can easily grade the top and get everything level (like OOP didn't)

Plus when one cracks you can just replace the one

Little John can do it

A single bag of concrete is like a 1/10th of a yd. This driveway is 5-6 yds. You'd be absolutely insane to try to mix all that from bags.

I've done for a larger slab with high schoolers in Mexico. It's really not that hard.

Child labor does make a lot of things simpler.

why?

Because that's 3000 lbs of concrete sacks you have to move.

500 lbs cement. and 2000 lbs sand/gravel.

so difficult to move!

much easier to move 2500 lbs of pre-mixed concrete lol

I just mix it in a shitty wheelbarrow for small shit

I probably wouldn't try to pour a whole fricking driveway without equipment, though

Why are you measuring concrete by length

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

It's cubic yards and I can only assume people just say yards because they're lazy.

i'm more curious why my old water meter measured consumption in "hundreds of cubic feet"

like bro, is gallons really that difficult? 100ftΒ³ of water is 748 gallons

Fair, and it doesn't look that bad in that pic. It doesn't look new, but it looks like concrete.
