Why are 99% of Tesla drivers such vaginas? They get a car that does 0 to 60 in 2 seconds and then drive it like a fricking golf cart. My theory is that it's an unholy admixture of limp wristed Prius types and high anxiety techcels who fly into a blind panic when they exceed 45 mph.

It's because the "gas mileage" drops by like 40% between 50mph and 70mph. It's actually pretty nuts how speed ruins the efficiency of electric cars compared to gas.

That sounds kind of dubious to be honest but idk. I do like how the rated mileage doesn't include the ~80% charging efficiency. I get why. But it also seems super disingenuous because peoples real costs are going to be 15-20% higher.

It's 87.5 on a 240v home charge and 83 percent on a 120v just because of the step-up voltage losses in addition to the DC conversion. For an extreme example of speed efficiency losses, my 1kwh battery ebike will go about 50 miles on a charge at 10mph and 10 miles at 35mph. It's crazy.

Just did some research. This appears to be correct. Electric motors have basically a constant efficiency. So as power produced goes up the power consumed goes up pretty much linearly. Combustion engines have a more parabolic efficiency band so as the power produced goes up so does the efficiency to a point, which is usually optimized around highway speeds. The electric is still overall more efficient, but those "empg" ratings are even more a farce than I thought.
