You see how nobody is in the store and the lights are low?

Actually no, that looks like normal nights in all the Oregon Freddie's I've been to for... my entire life. These aren't Fresnels being finely tuned to cast exactly the right amount and color of light onto a stage. They're goddarn florescents in a fricking grocery store. There's an on/off switch for them. Just like in a theater they've got a set of lights for the audience getting into and out of their seats it's just on or off.

I suspect that Pizzashill may not have been telling us entirely True and Honest information all this time.

The lights get brighter at open bud. Those are definitely on low.

That's funny, I've never had fluorescent lights before where when you turn them to low both tubes stay on. And they're both at full power. :marseyhmm:

Really?

Fred Meyer invested in dimmable ballasts and wiring for the entire store, versus the much cheaper "this light switch is half the fixtures, this light switch is the other half" in alternating banks?

>dimmable wiring

um do you need special wiring to dim something? That seems like the main advantage: you don't need to redue the wiring to make lights dimmable, you just send less voltage and invest in bulbs that can take it.

Incandescent lamps can have voltage reduced to dim with no additional wiring.

LED lamps get flickered on and off very rapidly to make it seem dimmer, and this can be done in the switch with no additional wiring.

Flourescent lamps, however, require a special ballast at the fixture that needs an external signal to tell it what brightness is desired. While you can use the style where the "brightness" is on the line voltage coming in, it's horribly inefficient at this scale. Instead you'd have constant line voltage at the fixture, and a separate 4-20mA or 0-10v signal coming from the light switch to indicate desired brightness.

This is better than my explanation. I have limited experience with fluorescent lighting at commercial scales.

It does not require special wiring, but it does require special ballasts. Finally, "just send less voltage" understates the problem because there are different dimming phases for slicing AC. Modern dimming does not produce a lower voltage but otherwise normal 60Hz wave because that approach is inefficient.

Instead, it takes a chunk out of the full 60Hz wave. Think of it as a strategically timed on/off switch that operates turns off briefly 60 times/sec in careful alignment with the incoming wave.

None of this matters for incandescent, but LEDs and ballasts need a matched, supported supply.

Yeah, my local store lowers the lighting on Sundays so that neurodivergents (etc) can go shopping more peacefully, but they do so by turning off half the lights, not actually dimming them.

Anyway, Pizza clearly usually works in the back warehouse, as they don't trust him around customers.

Youre the dramatard that does lighting for stage productions right?

I did some of that in high school/work experience and really enjoyed it. I wanted to get into it as a career but chose a boring trade instead :marseysleep:
