One time when I was a kid I heard my father telling my mother that maybe she could go and start teaching the little kids at school like the neighbors wife. I knew my mother wasn't fit for the job of teaching kids in a school and I think that's the first sign I ever had that my father didn't know what he was talking about and honestly never thought beyond what he expected to see happen irrespective of ground realities.
Imagine being 13 or 14 and hearing your dad suggest to your mom that she starts teaching little kids and going," oh no. Those poor kids."
I think that's a good test to figure out whether your parents were reliable or not. Ask yourself, would you trust your parents with the care of a neighbors kid. I would trust my dad to be there for the kid for a while but honestly long term I wouldn't expect it to work out.
