Tens of thousands of Russkies protested openly in opening days of war in Moscow and St Petersburg how many were arrested? Chinese have tons of protests too. Compare with systemic way in which US govt for eg tracked down ones who breached the Capitol. I'm sure Russian police can do something similar in those cities at least, CCTVs everywhere and everyone has facial recognition software by now. Yeah they'll make examples out of some. But others will be allowed to remain. That's whole point of Russia still being a parliamentary democracy. Let opponents of regime have a voice.

how many were arrested?

At least 1400, apparently.

Also, last I checked the US didn't sentence someone to years in a shithole prison for putting anti-Biden sticky notes in a supermarket.

Just 224 were criminally charged out of 16k arrested. :marseyshrug:

US imprisoned all people of a race when it last fought a major war lol, war time laws are obv exceptional everywhere.

Mass arrests for peaceful expression are ok if only a few hundred (that we know about) get jailed

:#marseyshitforbrainstalking:

The US had major wars against Iraq (twice), Afghanistan, Libya, Serbia, and didn't lock people up for posting sticky notes in supermarkets. They didn't do that either after 9/11.

Iraq for US or Afg for USSR(or US) weren't really major wars, society wasn't mobilized and they never really posed a threat to core state interests. My point isn't that they aren't repressive, like I said they are tyrants, my point is tyrants know well enough to leave average pleb alone cause bothering them too much is how you get guillotined but average pleb lacks guts normally to actually die trying to unseat some central authority over abstract things like liberty. Their brother getting tortured tho is something else. There have been a few regimes that repressive-Stalinist Russia or North Korea but they're exceptions in most dictatorships if you visit you probably won't have much trouble finding locals willing to curse govt off record. That kind of permanent fear isn't good for modern economy I think, prevents maximized consumption.

I try judging it but ESL beat me.

That said, authoritarian (not totalitarian) regimes do allow some degree of criticism, so long as you don't critique system itself. "Blame the boyars not the Tsar" we see on Rusdia today is one example, but you can find different degrees of acceptable critique among all autocracies

That's my point :marseylaugh: though. Publicly talk crap about the king, dictator, or emperor :marseygrapes: and see what happens

Sure you may get away with some level of criticism :marseyspotlight: against some institutions like the senate or nobles (maybe) but you cannot protest :marseymegaphone: head honcho who is the system :marseymars: itself

Can't speak for China, but it is true for Russia. Gathering of more than three people without prior approval are a criminal act and people obviously do get locked up for public protests, especially mass protests, but it's usually the organizers. For everyone else, they will get what is called a "protocol" written on them, which usually results in a fine, but will also lead to expulsion from school and if you work for a government org (which something like 30% of Russians do) further disciplinary action up to loss of employment. Russia learned a lot from the SU in that you really don't want to crack down on everyone, because at some point the bureaucrats themselves will stop following orders. You just have to target enough people with enough prominence to make sure that if people complain they do so without any kind of organization.

Bro go on Russian 4chin now and see their threads on the war its 90% doomers, their mil bloggers post doomer post under real names, its not north korea :marseyshrug: I doubt many countries would actually allow that many people who get to travel with national army to write suck bleak accounts of the war.

If protesters broke into a government building in Beijing, the Chinese government would also track down and arrest them.
