Let's look at the facts. Iran is playing things so cautiously that they are not militarily responding to having a close ally blown up in their own capital, or to having their proxy forces demolished. This is strategically the correct decision for them, in my opinion, since they have no way to seriously harm Israel or the US, so their only real option is to hunker down and maybe try to build a nuclear deterrent.
The idea that this government would try to assassinate a former US President and current Presidential candidate, thus almost certainly triggering a massive US attack on Iran, including on its nuclear facilities, is absurd.

Lol, you think the Biden administration would do anything? Iran would only have to worry if the Republicans win the election, and without Trump they wouldn't. Biden's government has a worldwide reputation for being soft.
The supposed plot was confirmed and announced publicly and so far nobody batted an eye. In the same way that all the other assassins apparently have no motive whatsoever, do not underestimate the establishment's ability to look the other way when it suits them.

I think there is no way that the US would let a former President get assassinated by Iran without launching a massive retaliation. If the Iranians waxed Trump, a lot of people in DC would be happy about it, but they'd also want to reestablish deterrence, plus it would be a great excuse to pull out all the "attack Iran" plans that have been growing moldy in some highly classified military computers for years now.

Normally I'd agree with you, but the current leadership is exceptionally weak. Notice that Russia invaded Ukraine only once Trump had left office. Notice that Israel are basically doing whatever the frick they want despite the US constantly calling for restraint. There is no authority.
Foreign plots to kill leaders are also far from unusual. The difference here is that there have been several attempts on Trump already. Those in charge are still refusing to act and are quietly hoping that the next one succeeds.
