I've seen people use 5lb plates to elevate their heels, I think it might help with leverages slightly, or maybe it's for mobility/depth, but I'm not sure, I squat barefoot. I've never seen anyone go with their heels completely unsupported though, that seems like it would make things wobbly.
This is what weightlifting shoes look like. Notice the heel, just like the plates, makes it easier to transfer force and help with that heeyup drahve. Heels raise like this dude because of poor mobility because he's lanky and doesn't know what he's doing, also why he can't go any lower than 1/8 ROM. I don't know why dummies like this don't learn to squat without the fricking bar first

While I'd prefer squatting with my feet flat on the floor, at least the 5lb plate thing still involves transmitting the weight through your heels.
