Am I wrong or is his hands inside the knurling? I just tried this position on my squat rack and my shoulders are wider than where his hands are. I can't get the bar in the right place to do a squat with my arms like his are.
I've seen people use 5lb plates to elevate their heels, I think it might help with leverages slightly, or maybe it's for mobility/depth, but I'm not sure, I squat barefoot. I've never seen anyone go with their heels completely unsupported though, that seems like it would make things wobbly.

Use a proper rack with safety rails. If you set them at the right height, bailing a squat is as simple as leaning forward slightly. The rails will support the weight and you can get out safely. If that's not an option, you may want to practice bailing safely, if you don't have a spotter or a rack available, it's a good skill to have.

No problem. Finding the right height can be tricky the first time, you don't want the bar to hit them at the bottom of a normal squat but if they're too low they won't help much. Try and eyeball them so they're about 2 inches under where the bar would be at the bottom of the squat and that should be ok.
They're good for benching without a spotter too, they should be set at a height where the bar won't touch when you're arched, but if you fail, you can flatten out and the rails will take the weight of the bar and you can just slide out.

The lunk alarm thing is so fricking embarrassing I would never go to a Planet Fitness even if it was my best option. I'm a skinny dork, but it's just a prefect bit of anti-advertising as a gym to shame people for actually liking to work out- like come on, I'm not even happy about being there I don't need some corporation judging me for giving it money and using the offered facilities.
Planet fitness isn't that bad in a pinch. They sell nice fanny packs too, and idk if they still do it but the goy slop they would leave out can come in handy on a bulk. I could never use it long term because the lack of free weights are a deal breaker, but the average gym goer doesn't even need free weights. I don't even trust the average gym goer to barbell squat or deadlift without harming themselves tbh.
