My county has cranked up property tax 6-8% for 8 years in a fricking row now, even though the local market is cold. Basically triple inflation rates. My mortgage is about 2/3s taxes at this point, forcing me to dip into savings so many times I basically have none left. If they do this shit a couple more times I'm going to literally be taxed out of my home, and basically everyone I know is in the same position. It's just so fricking bleak and feels like my entire community is on the brink of collapse. Up till 8 years ago the rates had been only 2 or 3% for decades. I don't know how I'm going to make it.

Good fricking questions, deadbeat junkies is a decent portion. To avoid accountability and our sunshine laws most of it has been dumped into 'discretionary spending'. Literally everything that has a regular budget like employee pay and pension, roads, parks all that shit is flat. The only 2 areas that have increased are discretionary and Sheriff. The jail is worn out and too small for all the violent hobos But everyone hates cops now so they won't build a new one. We pay triple to neighboring jails to house these people.

Actually I live in small rural town in a rural state. The problem is our counties are huge. In the wake of trump the nearest college town lost their shit; and despite constantly crying about gerrymandering, redistricted and consolidated so that all commission seats have a portion of the city in them to suppress all the small towns. So now the county is just an extension of their citys government.
