They have to have icons to show what tone a response is in because the game is targeted at literal neurodivergents who couldn't figure it out on their own.
I wouldn't be surprised if BioWare games stopped having combat altogether and just became 3D dating simulators. Apparently that's what their fans want.

When Bioware RPGs moved from the explicitly written numbered response options for unvoiced protags to the voiced paraphrase wheel, they did have a tendency to randomly take a "Sure" selection and turn it into your character saying "Yeah, and you want me to skin you alive too punk?" As with most of the apparent choices made for Veilguard though, it seems like a lazy solution.

That always reminds me of Witcher 2 where you have an option that says "Very funny", but if you select it Geralt just says fuck you.
