If you wanted visually great game out of DA2, they'd need more than just 6 months. It would have required complete rebuild of all worldspaces and probably enhancing the engine further as well. Practically remake at that point. (2)

If the combat really sucks, there's 0% chance I am playing it. I can't do it to myself again. I loved the Witcher 3, beautiful graphics and story and all that, but the combat in that game was absolute balls. Skyrim, too, it's like the combat is just irritating enough to not completely piss you off, but you're not exactly going to say anything good about it. I've had it with that bullshit. I don't really care if all the characters look like they're from How to Train Your Dragon or whatever as long as the gameplay is fun.

1. In 2011 open world fantasy genre was more barren than your nan's ovaries
2. Simple (too simple for us Morrowboomers and Oblivionchads)

It was fun in its time (which was more than 10 years ago) just because the story took a back seat and you could just frick around instead of accomplishing anything. Like how all the GTA 3s were more fun if you didn't actually do any story missions. I don't know why anyone is still playing it now, though.

Like open world RPGs have done so many new things in the last 13 years. No other fantasy game does first-person with movable physics-enabled objects. The market wants hack-n-slash fantasy with slow-cozy elements.

I couldn't ever truly get into it either.
I didn't think it sucked, I liked the open world aspect at the time and the deep lore, but it just wasn't this amazing pinnacle of gaming I feel like I was sold on.
Maybe one day I'll give it a try and get through all the way but after 25ish hours I just wasn't feeling it.

If you haven't played ghost of tsushima, I recommend it. Play it on hard though. I forgot how good combat could be in a game until playing that.

I've started Pseudoregalia recently and it's as if I had forgotten how fun games could be. Not much story, PS1 graphics, just a goat lady and a very satisfying movement system.
It's wild how some furry in a basement can put out bangers like that, while major studios will release some unfinished, janky slop after pumping in hundreds of millions over the better part of a decade.

I'll have you know it plays without it just fine, but then I'm still pretty early into it..
Anyway, it's an oldie and everyone's probably played it by now, but Dishonored is peak gameplay for me.

If you mod, Skyrim combat just needs a little tweaking to be fun and with heavy modding is truly engaging. I can't get into any Witcher game even though I've heard there's nudes.

I only played Witcher 3. I really liked the story, which is interesting because it's kind of an extrapolation of stuff from the original author's stories, like "what if the original work didn't end the way it did and we did something else instead" which could have been really bad, but they did a very good job with it. But the combat is just too easy and repetitive. It's kind of a pretty but boring game in a lot of ways.

I've not been involved since SSE came out, I understand locational damage is possible now and there are mods that give different effects for armor material and coverage.

Witcher combat felt almost purposefully bad. Like they want to force you to engage in the potion brewing stuff to end it as fast as possible. But you can just spam the shield and never worry about the difficulty of anything ever.

With Skyrim at least I became OP enough to breeze through the combat, which became basically just a thin vehicle for progressing the story.

Yeah I grinded my enchantment to 100 so I could put two enchantments on every piece and had an invincible mage with infinite mana for the end game. Never played it again after that, though.

Same. IIRC the way to break it (without using mods to just give you xp/power) was to enchant a bunch of gear to increase your alchemy level, then while wearing it craft a bunch of potions that increase your enchanting level. Then you chug the potions to enchant another set of gear with higher alchemy level, etc. etc. I think I got to the point where my enchants or potions had like +200% effect, plus I could enchant two pieces of gear. Then to really become OP, I spent another 30 minutes prestiging my alchemy skill over and over (very easy to level up when you make super potions) and got several extra perk points to spend on magic shit.
It was still fun tho. I enjoyed the actual freedom to play how you want. For example when that lady who runs the assassins guild (forgot the name) kidnapped me and forced me to pick a prisoner to exeecute, I just killed her instead and then went to her hideout and massacred all the assassins.

ME:1 is my favorite game of all time, but Dragon Age 2 was the death knell and everything since then got even worse. No idea why anyone expects a good game from BioWare. You might as well jerk off a corpse hoping for a cummy. I just wish they'd churned out another Jade Empire and finished ME:3 before they went r-slurred.

DA2 is a game I still defend because while the actual game mechanics sucked it had the best overall story and setting. Hawke wasn't the chosen one trying to save the world, he/she was someone trying to keep his friends and family alive in the midst of a diplomatic crisis.
The friend/rival system was also great since it avoided having every companion suck off the main character like in every other nu-Bioware game.

Dawg, have you played Immortals of Aveum? It was an $120 million dollar flop. I booted it up on Gamepass just to see where the heck that money went, and I can easily say it was the worst game I've played in years. Gameplay was a piss-easy mess of particle effects, and the unskippable - let me repeat this, unskippable - cutscenes had the worst, most godawful sub-MCU tier quip-a-minute dialog I've ever suffered through.I haven't played Forspoken. But I shudder at the thought that anything could be worse. It's like hearing there's something worse than Cthulu - knowing would only bring madness.I gave it more rope than I should have because I was just morbidly fascinated by how bad it was, where the money went, and good lord they even had Michael Kirkbride was writing what the heck happened.:

For anyone looking for a TL;DW of his reasons why:The writing is boring and feels like everyone is always happy go lucky. Rook talks to teammates like they're children.Art style looks like Pixar movie stuff and the facial animations betray any sense of emotion during scenes.Side and partner quests aren't woven into the main storyline at all and feels extremely dated. And they're basically all dialog or combat, no variety.Combat is extremely shallow and enemies are super tanky. He lowered the difficulty to easy not because it was hard, but because it was boring and took forever to kill things above that.Conversations are sterile and there aren't any dark moments like in past Dragon Age games. Feels like Bioware is protecting audiences from anything dark or scary.Lack of choice and the inability to say anything from dialog choices that might be upsetting or mean.He backs all of this up with video footage.:

Hm? How did you jump to all of those conclusions? At the time, DA2 looked alright. Wasn't groundbreaking but I don't think people were complaining about its graphics tech. But even then graphical tweaks aren't necessarily a game engine overhaul. A major chunk of game modding community rests on graphic mods that adjust textures, replace models, and other tweaks to get the game to a desired flavor. But that was not the game's chief failing. It was the dungeon and encounter design. A lot of the dungeons were revisits or even blatantly template designs. Battle encounters were frequently using the same cadence of throwing in adds who smoke bomb in the fight once you weaken the initial encounter enough. It happens in practically every major encounter.:
