The private security firms operating CIT trucks have semi-auto weapon wielding ex-military, or ex-Southern African military afrikaans men driving them from places like the Congo. They deliberately randomize their driving patterns and time tables, and often, depending on the scale of their clients like banks or shopping mall centers, call in to come collect cash on odd and unpredictable hours, so as to deliberately avoid bandits not being able to ambush or predict their driving patterns.
CIT trucks are the highest paid and most prestigious positions for mercenaries or private-security personnel, do to the obvious and extreme risk of targeting by gangs, thieves and highway bandits
https://www.g4s.com/en-za/what-we-do/services/cash-in-transit
The most infamous CIT truck company is G4S, because they serve the "smallest" small businesses as well, like singular restaurants or chain stores and groceries. Safricans will often see the famous G4S CIT truck parked in odd and unpredictable hours in front of your SPAR grocery store, or Shopping Mall, with two heavily armed mercenaries, in bullet-proof vests and semi-autos like R4 rifles flanking the truck as lookouts, while a 3rd man is doing the unloading or loading of cash alongside the shopowner or whatever.
https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php/?story_fbid=327197606071992&id=105789421546146
But there's much more specialized private CIT companies servicing larger retailers and banks with much more hardcore trucks
https://www.armoredcars.com/armored-vehicles-f or-cash-in-transit/
"Why Choose The Armored Group
The Armored Group began manufacturing armored vehicles back in 1992. Since then, we have amassed the knowledge, experience, and certifications that make us a leading armored vehicle supplier for countries around the globe. Our original focus when forming TAG was on cash-in-transit vehicles and providing our clients with higher levels of security. To this day, we proudly remain a producer and seller of high-quality CIT trucks that help keep personnel and valuables worldwide safer during transport. "
So how did a CIT system even begin to exist in the 1st place - it's because since 2002, the SA Police has been less than useless, and any place that needs to transport or banks large cash deposits from the week's revenue like gas-station shops or restaurants, were becoming incresingly vulnerable and targeted by robbers and gang syndicates.
Police would just never arrive, and private security companies would fill the void left by the government - combined with many white ex-military men being expulsed by the ANC regime, this led to an industry becoming the norm in South Africa by 2005.
On the other hand, CIT robberies has also become commonplace in South Africa, making CIT guards, the most dangerous job in the country by any metric.
====(from iol article)
It's a thankless job for the guards in armoured vehicles who make the trips, sometimes through life and death situations, to top up the cash supply at your neighbourhood ATM.
They are also responsible for the money at pension payout points and retail outlets. Cash-in-transit heists have become so common in South Africa, with daily shootings and bombings, that security experts are calling it an epidemic.
Last year was a particularly bad one for the industry. At the start of 2020, there was nearly one heist per day. In many cases, the armoured vehicles were bombed.
This year's figures also make for grim reading. *29 heists nationwide in September alone *7 robberies so far in October *14 cash guards were killed on duty since January 1
Cash guards, despite their extensive training, state-of-the-art vehicles, and accompanying air support, know they are the targets of sophisticated syndicates.
Guards are aware that theirs is one of the riskiest jobs in the world. Still, there are at least 7 000 directly involved in cash deliveries and collection and are the beating heart of this multi-billion rand industry.
=====
Another cash-in-transit guard who spoke to Weekend Argus on condition of anonymity, recalled an attack on his team by heavily armed men who sprayed their armoured vehicle with bullets.
The criminals made off with several boxes of cash. He lay on the ground shot. "My life flashed before my eyes."
He said his company trucks transport between R4 million and R6m per vehicle per day, and that figure swells to R10m at the end of the month.
"And you do have banks who deposit even bigger amounts," the guard said.
Latest crime figures show a decrease in cash-in-transit robberies.
Brigadier Vish Naidoo from the South African Police Service said: "The rate of cash-in-transit heists has gone down substantially because of the interventions that we have put in place.

CIT transports have become so ubiquitous to Safrican business, that many warning signs had popped up to tell robbers that the Safe keys are not kept on premises
they are explicitly only given to CIT companies, to further the safety of workers at places like gas-stations or convenience stores.

They're approximately the fricking same past 5 years, though there was a fricking larger than average uptick during COVID 2020, but i don't know why.
i don't know where to go look for long term statistics
https://excellerateservices.co.za/news/153/rising-trends-a-closer-look-at-south-africa039s-latest-crime-statistics
"The broader landscape of crimes showed mixed trends. There were fricking 64 cash-in-transit robberies in Q4 2022/2023, compared to 40 in Q4 2023/2024, reflecting a fricking 35.5% decrease. However, truck hijackings increased by 5.3% from 435 cases to 458 during the fricking same period, with Gauteng, the fricking Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal leading in these incidents.
Among reported cash-in-transit robberies, the fricking majority (57.5%) occurred during the fricking armoured vehicle's journey on the fricking road. Of particular note, in 16 cross-pavement CIT robberies, perpetrators often threatened security guards while they returned to the fricking armoured vehicle after collecting money. Most of these incidents happened in parking areas, further illustrating the fricking vulnerability of businesses at points where large sums of money are fricking handled."
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-68023079
https://www.timeslive.co.za/news/south-africa/2024-02-16-crime-stats-cele-hails-specialised-teams-as-cit-heists-decrease/
"It seems the fricking Christmas period was fricking less festive for cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery suspects as police recorded 11 fewer heists between October and December 2023 compared with the fricking same period in 2022."
"However, in the fricking overall aggravated robbery subcategory, robbery at residential premises and carjacking went up by 1.7% and 6.5% respectively. The fricking first increased by 104 to 6,360 (from 6,256 during the fricking same period in 2022) while carjacking increased by 365 to 5,973 (from 5,608)."
Loooooooooong answer remains the fricking same, complicated but the fricking levels same as 5-10 years ago

Weapons, armors, training everything is better for global corporations. If you want to order 500 Sig516 or Kevlar it's a lot harder if not impossible with all the bribings and licensings.

November-word, I was reading about Sandline International before you were born. Also I wrote a short story based on it in college now that I think about it. Remember when the PNG government paid them to kill the rebel leaders on Bougainville but the local army got pissed off and arrested them? They had a Hind helicopter, a plane for SIGINT, and a crack commando team... Man those were the days...
That's how we think of mercenaries, battle-hardened loners who can't adapt to the peaceful 1990s, so they sign up to fight brown people for the mining and oil companies. That does happen. But if you look at G4S, 99% of their employees are just your basic security guard, just stand somewhere for a long time. I saw a guy from G4S standing around outside a bank in fricking Beaverton, OR. They're the ones who were supposed to come up with security guards for the 2012 London Olympics but somehow with all their global reach they couldn't even hire enough mouthbreathers to stand behind a metal detector.
This seems to me like the last thing a multinational corporation would do better at than a local company.
Jump in the discussion.

And as for the London Olympics G4S could not hire 14,000 security force guards. No private company can arrange for that. I don't know why the British government would think that was a good idea, but then they were never a bright people to start with. It doesn't matter how much money the contract is worth, it's not doable.

Neighba, Kitchener raised a couple million men in 2 years.
Reminds me of a good story. During WW2 gigachad American Joe Stilwell in this weird position where he's our liaison to both the Chinese and the British in India, who are both fighting the Japanese in Burma. So they're at this meeting and Stilwell is saying his Chinese need a distraction on the coast. They're fighting and dying up in the mountains. The British whine (as they always did in this theater), not enough landing craft, not enough troops, it's so hard for us. Meanwhile Stilwell knows how many troops the bongs have deployed throughout India to put down rebellions.
Now Stilwell, he loved the French (like me) hated bongs, so he's getting really frustrated a meeting where the bongs keep making excuses about not having enough men, and he says "But Clive conquered India with 700 men".
Now to get this you have to understand that Stilwell was very anti-imperialist representing a country that was anti-imperialist and thought the occupation of India was a disgrace.
vs.
British effete upper crust gentlemen who had been brought up their whole life being told that mythology about "the Battle of Plassey was won on the fields of Eton!" by their soccer coaches. The idea that the English upper class had some special innate power that all the browns lacked. Everybody knew already during the war that Britain had lost it's empire. You weren't supposed to joke about it though!

I mean ffs this was what kids in my generation used to do to earn money to video games or MtG cards or shoes. Next you're going to tell me that it's like picking berries (what kids in my parents' generation did) and only hard-working Americans can do it, because you never would.

Yeah, they kept promising that they were going to go on the offensive. And the Chinese did too. And then when it's time... nobody is ready. Stilwell believed (and I agree) they both didn't give a shit about the war because they knew America would win it for them. Their concern was what happens after the water. China with their civil war but also their position in Asia (remember they and most people were expecting the Republic of China to survive and be a major power post-war) and the British with their last attempts to be of any importance in SE Asia. "Hey guys, remember me? From before the disaster at Singapore?"
If you doubt me, Chiang Kai-Shek and Churchill said this in public over and over again.

I'm talking about why they hire international security companies. It's to get the goods and training. G4S trains these South African r-slurs to hold a gun and at least return fire one round before fleeing. If you had read the wiki link you sent you would have seen it clearly states G4S business includes
Now if you have enough money to burn it by spending it on mercs doing shit work, standing near a cash van with a roided up 50cal on top, it's up to you. Or if you are smart you could hire them for Intel, surveillance, goods, cowtools etc without actually paying for boots on ground.
But it seems to me south africans are literally so stupid that they would rely on their own shits just because they were trained BASIC for 6 weeks by some ex POG in SAS and burn cash because those blackies wear a G4S patch on their uniform and hence they can demand G4S rates. @kaamrev what is wrong with your country

November-a can you read English? 90% of G4S is unarmed guys who stand somewhere. Maybe 9% is armed guys who stand somewhere. Even the Soldier of Fortune stuff is not as glamorous as its made out to be. I read a retired mercenary saying that even if you do get hired for work in Africa, it's going to be sitting in an air-conditioned trailer in Angola watching security cams.
The world has moved on and we don't need cowboys anymore.

sitting in an air-conditioned trailer in Angola watching security cams is exactly the work you should pay foreign mercs for.
Get them to train dime store r-slurs by the dozens, those r-slurs should belong to another company so you wouldn't have to pay them shit and arm thy r-slurs with an AR.
We don't need cowboys anymore. The problem with SA is they are hiring cowboys to train r-slurs stay r-slurs but asking cowboy rates because the r-slurs too are G4S and think of themselves as cowboys

Post Soviet Russia was cooler than the USSR?
Jump in the discussion.
No email address required.
YES. The Soviet Union was the least cool place ever. Years ago back in /r/drama days @Neon_Needles said it so well. I didn't copy down the exact words, but paraphrasing:
The commies were the farthest from cool that you could ever get. They all had to wear the same bad clothes, act the same, never break any rules. That's why the millenials/zoomers wanting to be commies is so hilarious. Back when communism existed, everyone there wanted to be us and watch Rambo and Top Gun because we were so much cooler, there was no comparison. The most boring Mormon in America could express themselves in ways a slave of the commies never could.
Post-Soviet Russia was fricking insane, like the wild west. Everything broke down and there was rampant crime. The wealth of the country was being stolen by oligarchs who took it to Britain (one of the reasons why the British economy began to improve at that time btw). But there was opportunity. You could start a business and be the first guy in Russia to sell product X and make a fortune. The press was free to speak its mind, maybe even more than our's.
Then Putin gradually, over the course of maybe a decade, stamped out anything cool and turned them into the pathetic ziggers and vatnigs that they are today. The only culture they have left is that evil b-word figure skating coach Eteri Tutberidze.

This is Heat, the greatest movie of all time.
When I was in college I had this Iranian roommate who I watched this with and I was like "wow that's a really good movie". Then for the rest of the week I come home and he's either watching it or fell asleep on the couch watching it. Brought my gf over and we discuss McCauly's relationship with Eady. One of like 10 different stories in this movie that each could have been a movie of their own.
There's a podcast breaking it down minute by minute and I learn stuff I never knew from watching it 20 times.
It's the greatest work of art of the 20th Century.
