In ancient Greece they only talk about bows as being a specialist weapon used by professional mercenaries from Crete. They always talk about slings as being the missile weapon used by everyone in those days.

Yeah this is this something that's confused me for a long time. Slings vs. bows. What are the trade-offs? Because there's this time c. 500-300 BC where everyone acted like everything was about slings.

You know when they started using wheels in Europe? In the 1700s. In some very limited places. The hard part isn't the wheels, it's the road. You need to put in a lot of labor to build a road. And then it's the winter and it rains and it gets washed out and you have to build it again. So it's not even about the road, it's about the social organization needed to get people out building roads all the time.
South America has its geological challenges with wheels. But basically this was not a viable technology until recently. The bullshit about "chariots" and Roman carts and shit? If chariots worked your ancestors would have rode them into Buenos Aires or Rosario or wherever.
Wheels only became practical in Europe in the 1700s but in most places they were the not a big deal then either. This was the last resort. If you wanted to haul stuff you would dig a canal and have a horse pull your barge. That's how most stuff got moved before railroads.
Where did the wheel bullshit come in? "Western Civilization" professors. But that's a rant for another time.

Pretty much, before the railroads the gauchos rode by horse, but there were also some roads called "royal roads" where carriages could pass carrying cargo from places like Bolivia, to Salta, up to the Buenos Aires port. But for most of the time the ParanΓ‘ River was the actual main "road", with Yerba mate, beef and leather being Transported either to Buenos Aires or Montevideo. Even today the ParanΓ‘ river is the Mississippi of the Southern Cone. Lots of grain transports flowing from there to the port in CABA.

I don't buy the Romans with wheels bullshit. I mean I'm sure it happened but I don't buy that this was really common outside of cities. As I say above, this is really matter of keeping the roads, maintained, which is a matter of organization and a centralized government. So yeah the Romans were better than a lot of later governments. But the difference is vastly overstated. You look at what resources the King of France could call on in the 1700s and it's vastly more than the Romans had. He could get dozens of guns hauled up to blow the shit out of Ft. William Henry on the other side of the planet. And in the next war they sent literally millions of pieces of flint to us for guns because they had the ability to mass produce them. And huge amounts of gunpowder because they had Lavoisier (read Pliny if you ever want to know how primitive Roman knowledge of chemistry was).

I don't know if the prevalence of archery has anything to do with technological know how in the context of Greece. They had bows so the technology was obviously there. Individuals could take it up as a sport if they wanted to. It just wasn't generally valued in Greek warfare and if they did need archers they could just hire mercenaries.
It's similar with Romans and horseback riding. Romans had that "technology" and individuals did it for sport. It just wasn't their favorite thing to do in warfare and in the days of the empire they outsourced to auxiliary cavalry because they could.

As far as I understand it:
Slings are a gimmick, Greeks/Macedonians/romans mostly used javelins for ranged combat
Why didn't they use bows (when everyone around them did)? Well they were famous for their frickyuge shields. Hoplites literally get their name from them. And a shield protects from stone/arrows quite well, but becomes useless with a javelin stuck to it.
As for why Greek/romans rekord heavily on heavy infantry (ie huge shields), they had cohesion needed to fight wars in this manner. And then combined arms of Macedonians to dominate wars in this manner.

Again, something invented in modern times. Like the idea that the Greek "polis" was this uniquely Greek thing. If you actually read the ancient Greek historians in their own language (I'm not pretending to be fluent but I can see what the words are) and they are constantly talking about Egyptian hoplites, Phoenician polises, etc.
And according to Herodotus, the one guy who ever even talks about this, the whole big shield thing was invented by the Carians. Who were deeply involved with everything in ancient Greece but were canceled from history in the 1800s because they weren't part of the stories that Oxbridge f-slurs wanted to tell.

I might have worded it wrong, I meant "unique" as in majority of greeks were heavy infantry, while elsewhere it was usually a minority. We know Persians go to great extent to hire greek marceneries when fighting Alexander, likewise successor kingdoms spend much effort trying to encourage greek settlements in their lands to provide for their armies.
And I was mostly compering greeks to babylonians and other middle easterns, ofc to the west they're romans themselves but also carthaginians, etruscans etc. who use h. infantry more.
With h. infantry being only a minority, you get different tactics like Persian pairs of "shieldbearer" (shield + spear) and archer. And this lets archers fire directly at enemy before withdrawing once melee is joined, archers firing from back line is mostly a video game/movie creation.
Not just earliest, royal peltants were a key component of late macedonian armies. Mostly since light infantry force can fit into gaps between inflexible phalanx, covering its weaknesses. And ofc Romans had their pilla.
