The simple fact is that McCarthyism had a higher hit rate than the aimless persecution/"red scare" framing most U.S. students get taught. Whether a person's communist sympathies justified their persecution is a separate debate; I'm only saying the targets of McCarthyism had major sympathies and weren't random victims.
The Venona project/intercept was a far more deliberate and sober anti-communist effort, and it showed extensive infiltration -- and overlapped with some of McCarthy's targets.
