It's very rare these days to work alongside a developer that actually understands the underlying impact of the code they write. All of the quality of life improvements we've seen in coding in the past twenty years has made our lives easier but dropped the skill floor significantly. Everybody has been noticing it in video games recently. Storage has become ludicrously cheap, common development practices respond to no longer consider storage as a constraint. Remasters of 1GB 20 year old games now clock in over 50GB. That's not complexity it's bad developers.

I enjoyed IT Ops but the double-edged sword is you either work in an environment constantly broken so you have to put out fires all the time or you work in a well-built environment where most things run smoothly but execs paying your salary look at you with scorn thinking you do nothing. In the latter, you have to constantly look busy but you get let go eventually anyway.

I think it's because their contribution can be copied infinitely. Netflix for example only needs so many talented developers to design the storage and hosting backends - they can then serve an arbitrarily-large number of customers, with the only "per-customer" cost being maybe server hardware (very low cost in comparison to revenue). In most other industries this isn't the case, even other white-collar stuff like HR drones.

The biggest thing about tech (as a business) is its ability to scale. Whereas with a normal business it takes time and money to buy/build new facilities, build up logistics, train people, etc, with tech you can have one guy deliver to millions (especially seen with indie games).
Take Valve, which only has 200ish employees but has a revenue of $13 billion a year. Think about the "value" of each employee there, contributing on average 65 million in revenue. And for what, it costs Valve $200k a year for them? If you want it can basically shit gold.
This also explains why VC is so interested in them and why we see the culture they have. With the ability to scale basically infinitely rapidly, they're loved by gamblers everywhere, rich ones (VC GPs) everywhere.

The funny thing is those bids usually ends up costing way more money because the projects get delayed for yrs or don't work. like the healthcare.gov scandal, Obama gov hired CGI a giant Canadian multinational IT contractor known for subcontracting to Indian java mills, they spent $200M using 300 people and it was completely broken when it launched.
