The South Korean coup attempt is something that sounds r-slurred but the more you know about the culture the more you realize it was turbo-r-slurred. This is exactly what people there don't want. Nobody wants the martial law of the 1980s to come back. It was completely psychotic to think that the army would have supported this.

The president and his wife are literally batshit insane and believe they have magical powers. They moved out of the traditional presidential palace because of geomancy. The thing where he had a certain Chinese character written on his hand for good luck during the debate...

Meanwhile, the opposition are... well guess who a psycho like this could beat in an election? Nakedly corrupt boomers who want to give the country away to North Korea. (Not hyperbole.)

At least the Philippines is less fricked up this year. :marseyshrug:

They never talk about it with outsiders but this what politics is really about in South Korea. There's two sides: psycho fascists who believe in magical goblins vs. commies who want to give everything up to North Korea. (This is hyperbole, but not nearly as much as you would think.)

This is really complicated. There is an expectation there that every able-bodied man will do his national service. This is like, well I've posted about 500 times trying to get across how this worked for Americans during the draft so refer to that.

And then you go back home and your kid is saying "Look, I hate Nixon and Reagan too but Jesus Fricking Christ dad, there was a guy with a rifle 50m from you with a mission to kill you, specifically you", and then you get into this huge fight. But in the end it's okay because we were basically the two original dramanauts.

Your whitoid salacious gossip is laughable. Ajumma said it was common knowledge in the 1970s in Korea that she was getting boned by the cult leader (the father of the "shaman").

Which I would one up by saying that she was exhibiting a behavior common in older (my age) people: Pretending that lesbians don't exist. Park was totally lezzing out with the "shaman" for their entire lives.

I dunno. I had this ajumma neighbor who was totally normal except that she was constantly doing some unnecessary home improvement project. I think it's like Vulcans with ponn farr. They're so logical that sometimes they need to let their emotions out in a totally illogical way.
