Justice Juan Merchan had earlier indicated that he was inclined to give Trump unconditional discharge, a sentence that includes neither jail time nor any other restriction that might impede Trump after his inauguration on Jan. 20.

This is pure corruption. They get to say hurr convicted felon! But by releasing him without any kind of punishment they isolate themselves from appeals.

No, they didn't. This wasn't a plea agreement, he absolutely can still appeal the conviction and no doubt will.

If they actually tried to put him away, he'd just say no. Maybe the cops could fight with the secret service then and we'd be just like South Korea, but instead probably nothing would happen at all and it would get overturned on appeal anyway.
