I think if you asked boomers and neocon pre-boomers if a 30 year man in an average sized town with a salary of 100k could afford a house he likes, a decent car, and a stay at home wife, at least 95% of them would say of course he can.

10000 bucks-26804 bucks in tax (assuming you live in Cali) = $73196 a year.
Rounding up $74000/12 = $6166.66667
Rounding up again you have $6200 a month for all your spending.
Assuming you spend $2500 on rent (don't have a clue on what the rent market is like in the US) you have 3700 for everything else. Is that enough to live on in Cali dramanauts?

I'm not sure where you got your numbers? If you're filing single, your tax burden is $28,304 leaving you with $71,696. If you're filing as married and have a child, your tax burden is $19,627 leaving you with $80,373.
Buuut, this means you're not maxing out your 401k and you're fricked in retirement. So you drop to $61k take home when filing married right there.
Your rent number is also probably off for a married couple with a child. $2,500/month probably will barely get you a one bedroom and you need two.
You can probably scrape by and rent for a family on a single income, but you will not be able to buy a house. The mortgage payment and property taxes will be more than your take home.

Got the tax numbers from an online calculator federal + Cali state) and yeah didn't add a 401k. I said I straight up made up the rent numbers.

When $1M only buys you a run down shack, your mortgage and property taxes will be more than your take home. This is the case for calicels.
