a lot of the smell is mold/mildewy clothes. because they crank the heat, don't open windows, don't let the bathroom air out/use the fan after showers, and have a lot of people too a small apartment their living spaces are filled with moisture. plus they crank the heat up and that stuffy mildew air gets all over the clothes and fabrics
