Certain anime franchises like DBZ, PokΓ©mon, Digimon, Yu-Ghi-Oh!, One Piece, and Saint Seiya (at least here in Macacoland) are so ridiculously mainstream and internationally popular, to such an extent that the whole "Japanese Anime" aura around them just simply isn't really a thing, they're just cool and very popular cartoons and toys that just so happen to be produced in Japan.
Especially in the case of DBZ, PokΓ©mon, and Saint Seiya, who have been broadcasted in Western countries since the 1990s, and kids grew up watching them because they were fun, not particularly because they were exotic oriental cartoons, they just morph into the childhood memory of millions of gaijincels as one of the many cartoons that they loved as kids, not particularly associating them with Japan (especially given the Westernized localizations of the 1990s and 2000s).
A shitload of DBZ, PokΓ©mon, and Yu-Ghi-Oh! fans are not "anime fans" in general, and do not consume absolutely anything Japanese or anime-related other than these multi-billion dollar international franchises, they are just another Disney/Star Wars/Marvel/DC slop with a different artstyle, thats it.
However, that foid is certainly an interesting a rare case, since One Piece may not really apply in here, since it did not gain popularity in the West until the 2010s, when the anime fandom and the otaku/weeaboo subculture and memes were already in full-force and were mainstream on the internet, its dubs were never more popular than the original Japanese dub, and the vast majority of One Piece fans watch it in the original Japanese audio, irrevocably associating One Piece with Japan.
Ditto with Naruto, despite its gigantic popularity, it is irrevocably associated with Japan and weebshittery, unlike the more sci-fi/eccentric worldbuilding of DBZ, PokΓ©mon, and Yu-Ghi-Oh!, which are not particularly associated with Japan, have little to no Japanese names and words, are easier to localize to Westoids, although Naruto is from start to finish the most Jappity Jap Jap story to have ever Japped, it is impossible to localize it or fully Westernize a series about Ninjas doing Ninja shit in a Japan-inspired setting where each and everything has a Japanese word and name, Naruto is even more Japmaxxed than the fricking Kojiki.
