Theres more in the thread

I'm not used to liberal spaces anymore its weird to see them all mocking Americans for wanting money, advocating for CA separating and valuing illegal immigrants so much.

Personally I only think there will be prices increases on specific crops for now, and if Trump doesn't pull back farmers will just purchase automated picking machines they only didn't before because mexicans were that cheap

Always was

:#marseykkkevil: :#!marseymoonman:

This situation is a confluence of issues that should have been addressed long ago. Work visas for temporary workers, particularly for agriculture and industries like construction, should have been much easier to access. These visas provide limited-term opportunities for workers during seasonal periods, encouraging them to return to their home countries afterward.

Most of these workers would prefer to return to their homes and live like kings off their wages earned here, but they don't because they fear they'll never be able to come back, or the opportunity cost is simply too high. Wets crossing the border aren't throwing parties about crawling Cape Fear-style into the undercarriage of an eighteen-wheeler at 3 a.m. They're doing it because the visa system is fricking r-slurred. They'd rather not play Border Escape Room, but if your choices are (A) pay $10,000 to a coyote who looks like he moonlights as a s*x trafficker, or (B) sit at home and watch your kids starve, you'd probably pay the coyote too. Then you'd climb into the greasy belly of a truck, praying the driver doesn't decide to run from ICE and leave you locked into the secret compartment in 120 degree weather.

Unfortunately, these programs didn't really get implemented, and part of the blame lies with the heroes of the working class, heckin wholsum unions. Let the workers come in, pick the strawberries, build the skyscrapers, and then, you know, go the frick home to Pipicacatitlan, right? Frick no. Unions went full sneed ahead. They saw the words "migrant labor" and saw the writing on the wall that nobody would put up with their bullshit if there was slack in the labor supply.

However, the demand for migrant labor isn't just because Americans refuse to do these jobs or won't work for the wages offered. The reality is that there simply aren't enough Americans available to perform these tasksβ€”picking oranges, for example, isn't exactly a job that excites Zoomoids in large numbers. Cultural and societal preferences for less physically demanding or higher-status jobs, combined with the location-specific nature of agricultural workβ€”nobody dreams of moving to fricking Fresno Cucklifornia after college, reduce the domestic supply of labor willing to take on these roles. Approximately 73% of U.S. agricultural workers are immigrants.

Obviously, having a underclass of fig-pickers isn't exactly the technological utopia we dreamed of. It's kinda fricking dirty, isn't it? Like the moral equivalent of kneeling on a fentanyl addict's neck and then wondering why they aren't happy. However, temporary workers though a streamlined and non-r-slurred H2-A process could unfrick this. They'd come, work, pay taxes, and then go home to their families with money in their pockets. Everybody wins. Except nobody can agree long enough to let it happen, so instead, we've have a ticking time bomb. An H2-A revamp avoids breeding resentment and would even improve relations in the Americas.

Honestly with a lot of the farms affected being a stones throw from silicon valley you'd think a bunch of the tech gurus would actually invent something useful to actually automate a job that deserves to be automated instead of making the fifth twitter clone this week but what do I know :#marseyshrug:

Jump in the discussion.

John Deere: Am I a joke to you?

For real, though. Farm equipment manufacturers are trying to automate stuff, but going about it the wrong way (eg - farmers can't repair their own equipment), which is putting people off.

Plus, the cost of new equipment can pretty steep, much more than migrant worker wages.

So, farmers can either buy new equipment that they can't maintain without additional cost and isn't 100% automated yet, or shell out far less for labor and continue using equipment they already own.

Doesn't take a genius to crack this nut.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Well I guess the hope is that increased demand for automated farm equipment will force farmers to buy new equipment or incentivize new companies to hop into the industry. But again, I am talking out of my butt

Actually fascinating I should learn more about the cost of labor and food. I'd gladly pay a dollar more for a pack of strawberries (wouldn't happen) if citizen harvesters were decently paid. The average distance food travels is over a thousand miles or something wild so makes sense how much gas is a factor.

The fact that the system has become so reliant on illegal labor doesn't validate that. Tapering off our dependence of this just like tapering off our over dependence on international trade will take time and there will be shocks along the way given the overreliance. What we get on the other side will be much better. And your Taco Bell wages will probably go up :marseywholesome:
