Help me understand:
If Trump imposes a tariff on say Colombian coffee. Yes - its the American company who imports it, and the consumers who buy the product, who will "pay the tariff."
But the thing is, if price of Colombian coffee doubles, who is forcing American consumers to buy it? Wont they just switch to Brazilian coffee?
Few California Libs buying expensive Colombian coffee to protest Trump and show solidarity with Colombia.
Colombia is not getting any more money than they would, in fact they will make less because most people will switch off Colombian coffee.
Trump gets those tariffs as extra revenue to put to programs like flying Colombians from California back to their country.
Everyone else is just gonna avoid Colombian products and buy stuff made in America like Trump wants, or stuff exported from elsewhere.
Like by all logic its just win, win, win win, win for Trump and L for the libs and colombcels and American consumer has minor inconvenience of having to change the brand of coffee they drink.

As you noted consumers would elect for the cheaper coffee in most cases. It will be less cheap then it's was previously, some amount of Columbian coffee would still be imported because mark-up is very high.
A loss for Columbia is not a gain for the US. Tarrifs have such a profound negative effect on welfare for US consumers a unilateral reduction in tarrifs even without countervailing tarrifs being reduced is welfare improving. They suck for everyone which is why they are barely used and economists overwhelmingly support their elimination.
We import 4* the value of oil from Columbia than coffee. We process the oil and sell the products, a tarrif here would make our gas more expensive both domestically and export.
High tarrifs also screw with net invoicing. US business usually doesn't pay for intermediates when they are delivered and instead does so 30/60/90 days after delivery so they can sell, or be well on the way to selling, the product. Paying CBP before delivery occurs means capital has to be reallocated from production to paying CBP so less production occurs.

This would make sense in a perfectly fluid supply chain, however contractual obligations can linger around and there are notable costs in the act of switching suppliers for most goods, especially if you need it done fast, so it may (probably will) drive up costs at the very least in the short term to compensate, if not permanently.

Yeah except there's only like three places (Hawaii, Puerto Rico, a small part of Cali) where it's commercially viable to grow coffee. So in practice it's just applying a layer of VAT to coffee and everyone pays more.
