Scary stuff for a Health teacher because I actually do teach about sexuality and gender. It's not my whole job, but it is part of it, and the curriculum we use is very lgbtq+-friendly.

I still haven't fully wrapped my head around why they do this. The Bluesky subreddit had a highly rated post being like "Bluesky isn't even left wing". Is it just to fully normalize their viewpoint so that anything nonconformist can be more safely struck down?

I think part of it is how one of the functions of ideology is to essentially make itself invisible, to naturalize a certain set of propositions. People don't usually see themselves as arguing for a particular ideological stance, but rather they think of themselves as arguing for the truth. It's way more obvious when someone opposed to you argues for something you don't believe in. That's why people always accuse each other of arguing in bad faith or pushing a secret agenda. The shift, I think, comes from these ideological propositions suddenly coming very strongly under attackβit makes them visible in a way. Now they acknowledge their reality, but actively support their existence, partially because identities and views are at least somewhat formed in opposition to other people's. The same kind of radicalization happens the other way too, e.g., the silent majority (invisible) becomes a beset (but visible) minority with stuff like the "war on Christianity."

part of me doesn't want to take the position they themselves have taken these past few years and just shut down all communication with anyone who even slightly deviates from their worldview but it's difficult not to just wall em off and let the echo chamber crush them.
How do you even communicate with someone who hates you so much for purely irrational only exists in their own head reasons?
