I too enjoy dunking on rationalists but come on now, any movement as large as rationalism will almost inevitably attract some crazies. Ziz and his gang are obviously completely insane. If rationalism didn't exist, do you think they would have just become productive members of society or something? I doubt it. They probably would have just latched on to some other movement. I too think that Yudkowsky is a silly goose but I feel like blaming rationalism for the Ziz nonsense is kind of like blaming the Beatles and the Beach Boys for creating the Manson family. It would make no sense.

if you read the written account of the ziz cult it goes something like "MIRI" (EY's organization) was a fricking scary cult with scary fricking cult mechanics. "cult incubator" is literally true. that's not one of mine, though, someone else coined that one.
so EY forms a cult, the people damaged by that cult go on to form a bad cult.
