I genuinely hate every single Canadian politician that's posturing to act tough by "fighting back" against Trump's tariffs. In fact, frick it, I'm going to longpost about my hatred for their arrogant stupidity.
Canada does not have the means to fight a trade war with the largest economy in the world. Somewhere around 40% of our economy is dependent on America while we comprise a measly 5% of theirs. All of these politicians that haven't done a single fricking thing in their entire careers for Canadian nationalism are now drumming up support to fight back against the big mean orange man, and the average layman is lapping it up because they haven't put even so much as an ounce of critical thought into basic fricking math at play. The current liberal government has spent the last decade skullfricking our economy into the dirt and prioritizing useless and r-slurred social messaging over the budget that the PM somehow thinks will magically balance itself, meanwhile we're running record high deficits and spending year after year. It is precisely because we're in a historically weak bargaining position that Trump is exploiting us. Everyone that's pissed off at Trump should be mad at the r-slurs that put us in this vulnerable position in the first place. You don't have to like Trump, but be fricking realistic about who's responsible for us getting exploited right now. Our PM has single digit approval ratings and is such a flagrant fricking narcissist that he's going to ride the Canadian economy into the dirt if it means the chance to redeem his image even slightly in the eyes of the general public that can't figure out he's the reason we're getting fricked in the first place.
That's also not to mention the constant failure to understand Trump's tried and true business negotiation tactics that should be painfully fricking obvious by now. There are people who are genuinely terrified that Canada is about to get invaded by the American military because Trump floated the idea just to troll Trudeau. Its called opening with a hand grenade and talking past the sale. The most prominent example of this was in the 2016 election when he said that Mexico would pay for the wall. Rather than question the construction of the wall, suddenly everyone was focused on whether or not Mexico would actually pay for it, presupposing that the wall was a foregone conclusion already. Trump is doing the same fricking shit here; he makes a big ask that obviously won't happen in order to put his opponent on the back foot and look weak so that anything that happens afterwards feels like a fair concession compared to what seemingly stood to be lost in the first place. Trump does this in literally every single negotiation he's ever been involved in, its patently fricking obvious he's just doing the same thing again, but you've got r-slurs clutching their pearls over the prospect of an American invasion. Even worse has to be the r-slurs trying to talk tough, saying shit like "America doesn't know who they're dealing with, Canada is the reason for the Geneva convention." Yeah, that was nearly a fricking century ago, the Canadian military is in an absolutely pathetic fricking state right now and there's no fricking chance that the average soy swilling Torontonian liberal urbanite is going to engage in guerilla militia tactics against a military power that's lapping us in military tech generations.
Rather than trying to fight an impossible trade war, literally all we need to do is call a fricking election, put a majority government in place (current polling all but guarantees one for the Conservatives), and start making really basic concessions to appease the orange mafia man. Just crack down on border crossings and pay the NATO contributions that we've been shirking for years and he'll ease back, its that fricking simple. I don't care that Trump says fentanyl is coming from Canada when the data says otherwise, he just wants Canada to stop peepeeing around with border patrol. More than anything, he probably just wants to humiliate Trudeau for talking shit about him, so an election alone would put us a step in his favour.

Trump just slapped 25% tariffs for no reason breaking a trade agreement negotiated by himself and said there's nothing Canada and Mexico can offer to change that, he didn't even left a space for negotiation or leverage. How the frick can anyone trust someone like that? And no, he doesn't have any "5d chess negotiating tactics
"
I don't get why burgers are so upset that Canadians got angry at a guy deliberately sabotaging their economy for nothing, is like burning your garage just so the fire can spread and take your neighbor's house.

Heck it's going to end predictably. New PM meets with Trump, they shit talk Trudeau, Canada puts a little more money to the border. Maybe by some miracle we get some deal on oil transport and refining.
The Canadian left will call the PM a traitor, of course.

Shit this really hits the nail on the head tbh. Of course Trudeau is up there talking about loving your Canadian neighbour and standing united and all the same emotional slop you'd expect from a grade 9 drama teacher while at the same time keeping parliament locked out until his fricking narcissist buddies in the liberal party can elect the next loser that sexy Indian dudes Jugmeet will prop up until October..... And by October I'm sure we'll have a 50 cent dollar and a 10% unemployment rate so the country will be nice and fricked for a hand off to the conservative party to have to try and deal with.

Impressive. Normally people with such severe developmental disabilities struggle to write much more than a sentence or two. You really have exceeded our expectations for the writing portion. Sadly the coherency of your writing, along with your abilities in the social skills and reading portions, are far behind your peers with similar disabilities.

Your comment misses the bigger picture here that I think is funny. Trudeau "standing up" to trump is exactly what he wanted.
Canadians fricking hate Americans. They come here and drive ten miles under the speed limit, get screamed at and cut off, go back home and cry about how everyone in America is rude.
The most populated Canadian areas are on the American border and 99% of their economy is serving teenagers because you can drink at 19 in Canada. So you go over there and it's literally like walking into a dorm room everywhere you go. This drives the Canadian insane and paints a picture of Americans as the teenagers steady goofing over there.
Trump poked Trudeau into appealing to those people who unironically think they are better than America. His response and canadas response is part of what Trump was looking for. He wants to show the world what democrats purchased after years of concessions to these people - ire.
Canada and Europe fricking hate us because they ain't us, and trump wants to rip the mask off. Trudeau and Canada doubling down is exactly what he was hoping for. Now everyday Americans get to see what the hateful online Canadian is like.

I touched on it briefly, mentioning that Trudeau is riding the economy into the dirt just to scrape back some semblance of a positive image, but you're right that I should've gone into more detail about Canadian's self-important smugness about being "better than Americans," despite having very little evidence to back that up anymore. There was a time where we could claim to be better on things like healthcare in particular, but we've taken our system for granted because of it and now its collapsing under the weight of our hubris. As long as we're convinced that we're better than America, we'll never actually bother to look in the fricking mirror and realize just how shitty things have gotten because we've already lied to ourselves about the one thing that defines us: "at least we're not American!" As though that were a meaningful cultural identity and not the pathetic cope of a nation perpetually squandering its potential.

You have a Trump level understanding of trade & econ.
Congratulations on being an r-slur.
You are fricking novices. Have you seen what ours looks like?
You are treating it like he knows what he is doing, he doesn't.
Trump thinks a trade deficit represents a loss when it doesn't.
No, he is extremely serious. This isn't art of the deal bs, he has been opining about a north American federation for decades. In his mind the misses in late C19 and WW2 in creating it represents a profound loss for the US. He is doing a legacy play, he wants to be the guy who created the empire.

No, slapping back tarrifs is the way to go and I'm glad our kitty politicians did it.
The more the market bleed on Monday, the faster trump will see reason.

If his comment is accurate, Canada relies on American trade 8x as much as the US does on them. What is a nosebleed for us is a sliced open femoral artery for Canada.

Canada cannot win a trade war, no, but if tarrifs make the US markets and some sector of its economy hurt then it will put political pressure on the Trump admin

Sure, but can Canada hold out that long? Trump doesn't need to get re-elected, and congress is slooooooow to legislate, especially when he bullies them so hard.

He already paused the tarrifs from mexico for a month; I think if Canada offers face saving concessions he'll stop on us too

That's literally all we had to do months ago. We've known Trump was coming with his plan to tariff us since November. Just putting out some vague fluff statement to assuage his ego like "we met with the upcoming President and he's a tough negotiator but we came to a fair deal and will be beefing up border security between our nations" and none of this would have happened.

Perhaps, but who would have thought trump would actually do it?
There were more trudeau trump talk today and it seems the US isn't even sure what it wants from Canada, with trump mentioning the banking sector (?) for the first time.
