Germany's energy storage capacity is currently less than 10GW in batteries, and less than 10GW in pumped hydro, and for idiotic regulatory reasons they're not building new hydro storage (which would be very important and good), instead they keep building wind turbines (even though each additional one is making their energy more expensive).
Germany's energy consumption per day is almost 2TWh.
So all of Germany's battery and pumped hydro storage could at best be supply all of Germany's energy for 8 minutes before emptying out. Obviously not even that is possible since the bandwidth of both batteries and water turbines is limited. Realistically they can provide 3% of Germany's energy for the duration of two hours, then 2% for another three hours, and then 1.5% for another five hours.
The western regions have GDP per capita far below the US. Even if the eastern regions catch up with the western ones, their per capita GDP will still be far below the US.
