As a !freemarket guy I'm pretty wary of tariffs.

But in this context it's pretty obvious Trump is using them for diplomatic leverage, so everyone talking about them like they're supposed to be the new normal of long term economic strategy is fuming over a moot point :marseyshrug:

For them to be effectively used as leverage, people have to believe you're gonna follow through. So was he bluffing, or was he going to economically frick America for a symbolic personal victory?

Of course, Trump is too stupid to see why tariffs are a bad idea, which is why negotiating with tariffs is such a great idea.

It would be an economic skinned knee for America and a sucking chest wound for Canada and Mexico. The idea would simply be to hold out longer than them... I guess

If we replaced income tax with equivalently burdensome tariffs, I'd actually kinda like that. I'd invest more money, buy American, and keep a larger share of my paycheck, and I'd shift the tax burden onto r-slurs who consoom more.
