Phoenix is America's armpit but Gracie's is easily one of the best dives I've ever been to.

What's wrong with Phoenix? I've never been but I assumed good weather, lots of outdoor space, big houses, not penned in by any mountains/water.

So it's fun to shit on, but I actually do like Phoenix. It wouldn't be my first choice of places to live, but I think it's fun to visit. It has surprisingly interesting historic, cultural, and geographic attractions, most of the amenities you expect from a huge 2nd tier US city, and great access to outdoor recreation opportunities.

The thing people rag on the most is the sprawl and the grid. Except for where it bends around mountains and parks, the metro is almost a perfect grid that covers about 15,000 square miles and is crisscrossed by big 8-10 lane main roads that can run in a straight line for close to 60 miles end-to-end. It's also very new, so much of the construction is either steel and glass or brown stucco and gives it the feel of one massive endless subdivision.

There are many parts that are cuter, and some of the older nice neighborhoods like Paradise Valley and Coronado are beautiful, but in general it does have a feeling of being Generic Anywhere, Western USA that I think people find off-putting. I think most of Southern California is like this too, but it benefits from people romanticizing it in a way that Phoenix doesn't.

Holy shit.

I think you've sold me on it. I always wanted an outdoor kitchen and outdoor TV.

Heck yeah. It's not as cheap as it used to be but if you want to build your dream mcmansion and fill your yard with sculptural otherworldly plant life there aren't many better places.

Bongs have a history of doing very well there
