If you want to do it, just fork or work with the rdrama (dot) net website and use that. It is by far the best open source reddit rip off. It looks stupid because they deliberately layer dumb stuff but the core is good. I think it strikes the best balance between something that has its own charm but isn't a shitty phpbb website that sucks to use.
