When I was first exposed to /r/stupidpol I thought "oh wow finally a subreddit full of reasonable people to escape the eternal circlejerk" :marseyclueless:

I was then immediately banned for disagreeing with the notion that flipping burgers at McDicks doesn't entitle you to co-ownership of the franchise :marseyobey:

i don't understand the idea of "burger flipping doesn't actually contribute positively to the economy so it not being a living wage is actually a good thing" is the ultimate heresy to them. It's a worthless luxury item that would swallow up good workers if it paid well. Who cares? It should be for teens and junkies only

"Living wage" is really an anti-socialist meme because even the federal minimum wage in America is enough to live on if you work full-time. They get upset instead of happy when you point out how livable it is because it's a sham.

They only talk about a living wage because they are so divorced from the concept of labor organizing that they can't even fathom demanding to be paid more just because they'd like to have more money, there has to be some soy crying about how they're literally starving to justify it to themselves.

Rightoid sneeding about "burger flippers should be paid poorly because how else will I look down on them?" is its own kind of r-slurred.

I think a set of people like trotting out "living wage" because they don't have a need to define exactly what a living wage is. It's always MORE though.

It's like teachers. They aren't badly paid by any stretch of the imagination, but they should always be paid MORE, but the person saying that rarely has any idea how much they actually make.

You can't live off federal minimum wage. That's $1160 a month before taxes. That's under the poverty line of $15k.

Thank goodness there are no people under the poverty line because they all died.

The Idea of livable wage is that you don't need to be on government programs to sustain yourself.

The same people that make drama about a living wage also want to expand the threshold for the government programs, often even to abolish income qualifications. Hence "living wage" is just an arbitrary amount I would like to earn.

How does that dispute that federal minimum is not livable?

Because defining what is "livable" by an arbitrary metric, the threshold for income-based government programs, has nothing to do with what the word livable normally means. It's like those people who say that there is nowhere to live because the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment is more than the minimum wage (why must it be the median rent? why must it be a one-bedroom apartment?).

Long-term wages can't really be at a literally unlivable level because by definition is not sustainable; you won't have anyone left to work at that wage.

Exactly. It's meant to be someone's first job. If you are pouring sodas as a long-term career prospect it might be better to consider Canadian Healthcareβ„’

I'm not saying it shouldn't get any money and doesn't contribute at ALL but when you counterbalance it with the cost of healthcare because of obesity it breaks even at best

But think of all the skiing resorts that would become ghost towns if all of the people in the healthcare and insurance industries didn't get money from fatties.

yeah that's what it was in 2019, you could say literally anything there as long as it was funny and people would give it the time of day. that changed VERY quickly after bernie was over and they absorbed refugees from banned subs and everyone went insane over covid. there were no longer easy dunks on normie democrats trying to weaponize PC culture against the left so they quickly collapsed to unholy fusion of right-populists and theorycels as the only way to fit in.
