They filmed Day of the Dead in an archive cave. High salt content keeps the records dry.

Day of the Dead is my favorite "of the Dead" film by far. It's a lot more bleak and claustrophobic than Dawn (also a great movie), which really suits the narrative. The gore is outstanding, too.
The best part is the acting. Each performance is top-notch, and blessed us with one of the best lines uttered on film:

When Joe Pilato died all the obituaries mentioned his death scene in that movie. The innards that get ripped out of him were chicken guts that had been left for a week in an unplugged refrigerator. The smell was so bad, all the crew wore masks (make-up creator Tom Savini had a full on gas-mask he'd swiped from his time in the military) and the actors playing zombies had their noses plugged up with wax. Only poor old Joe could smell these rotten chicken guts.
